I'm posting this to self report. I watched (most) of the race (term used loosely) last night. Lap after lap, I watched these guys push each other around, two by two. My impression was the stock car version of CART's Hanford Device from the late 1990s.
They did no meaningful racing until just before the end, when, the supposed best drivers in racing, could not run five green laps without taking each other out.
On the second green/white/checkered attempt, the leaders managed to make it to the finish, while the remnants of the field, in two separate crashes, destroyed each other behind them.
NASCAR was unwilling to throw the yellow flag and cars at a standstill, facing all directions, saw cars whizzing by them at full throttle.
What happened to real racing?
I am NEVER watching this again.

I saw the same thing you saw Steve. It's aggravating enough to watch that on TV, I can't imagine driving to the event and incurring all the costs involved in attending that sham. This is another example of sanctioning bodies attempting to "level the playing field" in the name of entertainment (TV ratings) and in the process ruining the product.

I like Nascar racing. The Coke 400 was a bit boring, but the average race is good. Nascar almost never throws a caution on the last lap. Who wants to see a race, any race, end under caution? As for the drivers running full throttle, only an idiot would drive through a crash at full throttle.
I may get kicked off the board for this, but... except for the 500, I'd watch a Nascar or F1 race on TV rather then an Indycar race. I find Indycar, at the moment, rather boring.

Not all NA$CAR races are as boring as their marquee events at Daytona and Talladega. Why anyone thinks these high speed parades are fun to watch is beyond me. Three hours of droning around with irrelavant lead changes followed by 15 laps of eliminations due to crashes, ending in green, white wrecker finishes is not my idea of racing. NA$CAR blames the economy for lack of attendance at their races. This may be partly true, but NA$CAR needs to recognize the diminishing return on investment the fans are getting. NA$CAR has become a production company for the TV business. The best part of last nights snooze fest was Wally and Kyle, no boogity, boogity and no gopher!

I somewhat agree with 2lapsdown that NASCAR puts on a decent show at places like Richmond, Bristol and the like. The larger the track, the less interesting they are.
That said, I must strongly disagree that Indycar is boring. The last race at Iowa is absoultely as good as racing gets. More ovals please.

I missed it as I was out hiking, but it sounds like I didn't miss anything. I HATE GWC, and as mentioned, 'the best drivers' in the world can't complete two laps at the easiest track in the world to drive without wrecking the entire field. Let's call plate racing what it really is: Demolition Derby.

If we didn't have them the race would always end under caution Im interesting in seeing what fuel injection dose to the restrictor plate computer box races next year. ;D

That's easy. They will be able to let Dale Jr. win as much as they like. Pro wrestling is more real.

Now Steve, you're not suggesting JR's win in the Wrangler car in the Nationwide Series was suspicious are you?

I did not see the race until watching the highlights and dicussions on Wind Tunnel.
That said I have no idea Steve how you compare that type of racing with the Hanford racing of CART. I attended every CART race at MIS using the Hanford and never once saw them running nose to tail two by two. I never saw them wait until the last 10 laps to finnally start racing and get stupid at the same time.
What I did see was the best racing I have ever seen and over 70 passes for the lead and those were only counted at the line so there were actually many many more. I also didn't see any wrecks take out half the field. I saw edge of my seat, hold my breath for laps at a time racing at over 230 mph.
I agree with every one of your points but don't see how you could even remotely compare it the CART Hanford races.

Michael,
I suppose it was possible that you made it to Mars and back on Saturday, but just to verify we will need you to produce decals of your shuttle. ;D
