Have started such a car with an original kit. Well, sort of a kit. The "under-a-table-in-a-bag" type kit. The unusual thing was it has no manufacturer identification and was incomplete. Anyway, the boxed kit does not have wire wheels. Does anyone know hwere to find such wheels/tires? Second, I've not found any clear-cut pictures of the rear of the car to use as reference. Huntington's book, Indy Car (page 14), shows the car withj the kit fuel tank and chain drive. Both are incorrect. You're right, it is a good basis for the '15 winner.

I made this kit, or rather modified it, back int the '90s. as you can see from my avatar. I'm not sure about the Indy version but there are a lot of pictures of the 1914 French GP winning car on the net. As for the wheels I cut out the artillary wheel spokes and measured and drilled the rims, made new hubs and wired them up using fuse wire. It is time consuming and a little fiddly but well worth the effort. I don't think I've come across any aftermarket wheels or photo etch of the right size to convert due to the more unusual scale. I'll try and post some of the pics of my model, it won a few awards so should be of some assistance. Mercedes had five team cars for the 1914 French GP and each was set up for the individual preferences of each two man crew thus no two are the same. rear body work varied alot as did diff' and gearbox ratios. Sorry I can't help much with the Indy car but I have researched a bit on the GP car, albeit some time ago.

This is a pic of the left front wheel of my 1914 GP Merc. I'm struggling to get on with the IT stuff, better at the models, but there are 28 pics on my face book page you are welcome to look at, it's under my own name no nicknames etc to mislead anyone. In the mean time I'll try to get to grips with image posting a bit better. The rear end which is all scratchbuilt. I'm afraid the model is rather old now but if this is of interest to anyone I will post more. regards Ian
