I've been studying photos of Foyt and Sach's 61 cars on First Turn Productions site. On some of the photos of each car there appears on the lower left of the fuel tank something that resembles a fuel buckeye. Some of the shots also show each car without this. My question(s) What is it and did Sachs have this for qualifying as I want to build the car as it appeared on pole day. Also, did AJ have this on race day? Thanks, I know the answer is out there somewhere.

The part you are asking about is where Foyt and Sachs fuel there car during the race if you go to You Tube you can see Foyt's pit stop where they hook up the fuel hose to the car. The fuel filler on the headrest is used as a vent because the fuel was pressure feed into the cars back then, no longer allowed. If you look at Foyt's car it only has a single fuel cap on the head rest where most of the other Watson's have 2 , 1 for fuel and 1 for a vent. Foyt's car was a Watson copy built off and earlier Watson design. The first Watson's only had the 1 fuel cap. The Sach's car had the 2 caps for Qual. and added the 1 on the side for the race, probably though it was a better idea, But is was Foyt who had the problem during the race. It was taken of for next years race and he went with the 2 cap in the head rest from then on. Hope this helps Old Photos

John, I've pulled out my trusty Clymer 1961 yearbook and I can tell you that Foyt and Sachs definitely had some sort of opening on the lower left side of the fuel tank during the race. Several other cars did as well. The pole position photo of Sachs (presumably taken on pole day) showing the rear of the car doesn't appear to have this device. I have to plead ignorance as to what this thing is. Maybe some of our more mechanically inclined members can tell us. Gary

Just read Old Photos' post. The Clymer yearbook has a brief article about a new high pressure aircraft fuel system being used in the race and it mentions the vent in the top of the tank. Mystery solved. Gary

This is absolutely the info I was looking for. I'll have to figure out a way to scratch build the filler for Foyt's car but it shouldn't be that difficult. I have the single vent for Foyt that I got from Lance. Thanks a million to both of you!
