Hi all. Bought few months ago the Monogram Kurts Indy Roadster, the kit comes with an Ofy engine but the head and valve covers are not good. Any idea in how to make it better than looks now? I'm thinking in mold the Revell of Germany Jaguar XK120 head /valve covers and try to scratch a new engine. Any idea? Cheers Alexandre

Hello! Welcome to the board. I believe I have noticed your questions on Randy Ayers board in the open wheel section. You seem to have a keen interest in the Offy engine in scale form. I share that interest. Please click on the link to another thread concerning this subject and feel free to PM me or ask any other questions you may have on this thread! mb2501.proboards52.com/index.cgi?board=6378&action=display&thread=235Bill H

Alexandre, Here are a few pics to help with your detailing. I am pretty sure olcalhoun and an associate (who I cannot recall) are planning to cast some Offy engines that are much more realistic than the Monogram "blob". However, I have noticed in my comparisons that the cam covers from the Rislone Offy would look fairly decent in scale just glued onto the top of the Monogram engine. That combo matches up very closely to the Etzel Offy, which everyone agrees is the crown jewel of scale Offies...Height wise it makes the engine about perfect but the cam covers are a bit too short to be really right. I can try and take some pictures of this combination if you like, compared to the Etzel. The first pic is an old postcard and the other two are of the 1/8 scale GMP model kit(or diecast) And here is some detail on an actual Offy magneto... Bill H

I have seen photos of the exhausts of Offy engines exiting on both the right and left sides. How was that achieved? Were the heads reverse able? It seems that almost all Watson roadsters had the exhausts exiting on the left side, while other car builders exited the exhausts on either side. Thanks.

Smokey, I know for sure that the intake and exhaust were completely reversible. Something about an oil passage being plugged and redrilled I believe...and cam boxes being swapped? I am awaiting a few publications dedicated to the Offy and I will further my education on this subject when they arrive...

Hi all. Tanks you guys, i'm planning to scratchbuild one engine or cut and clue the Jaguar engine in the Offy engine. I confess that i'm fascinated for this engine since the first time (1973) and don't know why Monogram didn't made a more accurated engine in this kit. Also i'll check some motorbikes in 1/18 scale, in some, the engine head is close to Offy head. Cheers. Alexandre

The cylinder block was cast as one piece with what ordinarily would have been the cylinder head. The crankcase, which is usually integral with the cylinder block, was cast as a separate piece. The head/block casting could be rotated to reverse the intake and exhaust. Since there was no separate cylinder head, there were no head gaskets or 0-rings to blow out when they supercharged it, which is why it could withstand all that boost.
