There is a reasonable Hewland in the Heller McLaren M7 and Brabham BT33 1/24th kits. Otherwise use a 1/20th or 1/12th from a Tamiya kit for measurements and inspiration.

Hi guys. I'm triyng to scratchbuild a 1/24 Hewland gearbox, but without a good result. Does anyone have an idea? Cheers. Alex There are a number of different Hewland gearboxes. I agree with Flyingkiwi about the Heller kit versions, those are for F-1 cars and later F-5000 cars. The Heller Brabham F-3 and Matra F-2 kits each had the appropriate gearbox for those cars. The Gurney Eagle kits have the LG-500 which would be suitable for Indy and Can-Am and earlier days of F5000. The AMT McLaren and Eagle versions are the 2 speed Indy versions of the LG-500. Finally, try this: www.hewland.com/

Thank you guys! I found one that was a part of a tamiya kit, Tom's Toyota , looks exactly for what i'm looking for. Is for a scratchbuild 1/24 Mclaren M23, i think that the LG500 aws also used in F1 cars (DG500 ? ). Cheers. Alex

I am assuming you mean with the DFV.
The LG 500 was not to my knowledge used in F1. Its too big. Can Am, F5000 early and Indycars yes.
The DFV was coupled with the FG400(and its variants)primarily. The DG300 and the FL200( Shadow) were also used, but very infrequently.

McLaren used the Hewland FGA in the M23 with modifications by McLaren. Biggest mod was conversion to 6 speed in late 1975. The FGA was the paddock standard gearbox with the Cosworth in the seventies. M23/1

Here is some photos of an LG box which was used in F5000 cars and up to around 6 liter sports cars, a heftier version of the F1 box.

Thanks again flyingkiwi, two very good photos. I'll try to scratchbuild, but i think that the best way is try short a 1/20 scale gearbox from Tamiya kit. My projects are all stopped cause i'm im process of divorce and almost all my stuff are in the ex-house. Cheers. Alex
