I noticed Stu suggesting Calvin build a Lotus MKIII type78 in his beautiful Wolf WR1 build so I thought I would share a WIP on the one I started and show some aftermarket goodies that make a difference and share some tips too.. I was right in the middle of this build when I dropped everything for the Lotus 56B Offy WIP and now the So Cal NNL is a couple of weeks away I am itching to get building again..
I ordered a DFV detail set from www.thundervalleyf1.com and its basically a gasket set for the DFV, it also includes starter and water pump brackets, injector tube gaskets, injector tube plates, the kit pieces are way too thick, exhaust gaskets, and engine mounts plus more!! For $30. it is a good investment. Note: Each DFV in the Tamiya kits is slightly different so order it by your application. I also so far have used over 150 RB Motion bolts, washers, Allen (Cap) bolts, and more so far www.rbmotion.com .
The first pics show the water pump and starter assemblies they have gaskets installed , TIP if using the gasket set you need to carefully shave off the bolts heads and replace them with real bolts after putting parts together also allow for clearance by cutting down mounting surfaces due to space used by the gaskets. I paint detail the bolt heads with chrome silver and another shade of silver and added a few RB Bolts
It also shows how I separated the head and block using 2 shades of silver.
TIP Even though the parts come in colors molded very close to the finished look, Paint Everything even if its the same color as the molded part, it will look 100% better than having any unpainted parts.
these pics show the Cam Cover bolts using 12 bolts per side, fuel rails which used about 50 bolts and the base injection gaskets as well as the injector tube gaskets. I used a bunch of Allen (cap) bolts on the fuel rails and injector mounts and think they worked out pretty good. After I showed these pics to RB Motion he decided to put out a DFV Cam Cover bolt set I think it runs about $48.
The trans axle used a lot of bolts,I painted Tamiya light Gunmetal on the main trans and the other parts other silver gray colors. TIP Mix up Testors gloss red and flat orange until it looks like GE Red Hi-Temp Silicone sealer, apply to the mounting surfaces between parts, while still wet glue on mounting pins and squeeze together and it will look just like the sealer used on the real car parts.
I cut down the Oil tank filler a little and used a aluminum 1/24th scale gas cap and a photo etch round part to replace the cast on part. I also used some Modelers a/n 90 degree fitting for the oil cooler lines.
Here is the basic engine without wires and hoses, I still have a few tricks up my sleeve on those. In the second picture you can see the water outlet gaskets. It may take a bit for me to continue assembly, but look closely, the more you look the more you will see..
