2001 #68 Team Penske Dallara Kit Bill Jorgensen body with some parts from an Etzel 1999 Dallara Decals Indycals Paint Tamiya TS-29 White & TS-36 Flour. Red Day One Body Prep My latest build will be Helio Castroneves' 2001 Indy 500 winning Penske Dallara, I will be using Bill Jorgensen's 2001-02 Dallara body with some parts from an Etzel 1999 Dallara The body is a very nice casting that needed just a little cleanup, mostly in the cockpit and underside areas. Once that was done I began to open up the holes for both suspensions and the front wings I then did a quick test fit of the parts. With that done I started to backdate the body to 2001 specs this mainly involves cutting back the tops of the side radiator openings and sanding the area smooth. A coat of primer will finish up day one The body after clean up The Body with the front wings and lower front suspension added The front before cutting the area marked in Black will be removed And after cutting and sanding we have a 2001 Dallara I do want to end this post with a big thanks to Bill Jorgensen not only for the body but also for the help and encouragement he has provided over the last few months. Thanks Bill Thanks for looking

Great start! Thanks for posting this. I've had the '02 on my list for a while, if I can still get decals.
Ironically, I just stumbled on your Rick Mears project blog the other day through an unrelated Google search. Good stuff there. Very impressive job on the '84. Did you ever get the '91 back on track?

The 91 is still in limbo I'm going to rebuild the 1988 and go from there

Day Two The Pain I had planned to spend most of today getting all of the fabrication of work done but a nasty work accident left with a giant hole in my leg so this will be a small update. About the only thing, I did get done today was to start fabricating a few parts for the build this included both fuel buckeyes, the rear wing supports and the on board camera. None of them are really that good looking but after a coat of paint it's not going to matter I also shortened the gearbox from the Etzel kit to fit this body and that's about it for today hopefully I can get the body all set for paint tomorrow Some of my fab work The body in primer with the gearbox Thanks for looking MB

I know what you're going through with fabricating the small parts. It's a tedious job, but one that can make or break the model. Looking good.

The 2001 was the 2nd ever Indy 500 I watched on TV and when the Penske cars showed up at Phoenix a couple month before, to test things out, they didn't really do that great. But heading into the 500 I really didn't expect them to be as strong as they were. I was totally surprised at the time, which later I learned not to be surprised about Team Penske. LOL

Day Three Nearing the Finish Sorry for the delay in this post but sadly between work and my leg I have had no time to do much of anything. I started by making the timing transponder from some Millput after that had cured, I glued it to the left front of the body, and then I turned my attention to the front wing end plates using a photo of the real car I quickly made a template and cut the plates from .010 sheet stock and glued them to the front wings. Next all the holes for both the front and rear suspension were drilled out, and everything was test fitted once I was happy with that the rear wing supports were glued to the modified gearbox, and the rear wheel kick ups were also glued into place. All that is left is to glue the camera pod and then head to the paint shop. Thanks for looking MB

Once again, sorry for the lack of updates but things have been very hectic of late. Ok on to the model I was able to lay down a very nice paint job on the 01 Dallara that only needed very little touch up to look good after it had dried I installed both the gear box and cockpit then it was on to the rear suspension I used copies of the suspension parts from an Etzel G-Force, and they fit the Dallra almost perfectly just a minor trim here and there to get a great fit. After giving the parts time to dry, I installed both rear tires, they are resin pices that I painted with Wal-Mart Flat Black the OZ wheels were painted wit Model Master Aluminum Metalizer and buffed to a nice shine. The front suspension parts are copies of the Etzel Dallra parts, and again they fit almost perfect and the front wheels and tiers were finished the same as the rears. I then started on the decals which are from Indycals and are just fantastic but being the klutz that I am I managed to run most of the sheet by spilling water on it, so I placed order for another set and will move on to the last few parts that need to be fabed. So all that's left is to make a set of mirrors and a wind screen and then finish up decals. This baby should be done by the end of the week. Thanks for looking MB

Looks great! Quick question though, anyone know why the word M@r1b0r0 wasn't on this car for the 500? It has the paint scheme and I've seen other pictures of the car where it was on there, but not for Indy.

The huge tobacco agreement specified Philip Morris could only sponsor one team in one series. Penske ran M@r1b0r0's on the car the whole month of May but before the race it was determined that running Indy was outside of the CART/Penske contract so the cars ran without M@r1b0r0's in the 500.
It is also why Player's stopped being able to be on the sidepods of the Forsythe cars in 1999. Because Philip Morris was the distributor for Player's in the US, Philip Morris could only have one brand as a sponsor so Penske kept M@r1b0r0 and Forsythe had to run some name on the sidepods other than "Player's". They cleverly got around the ruling by running Players-Racing.com in 1999 and Players.ca in subsequent years. But when the Players cars were outside the US they could run the Player's name on the sidepods again (unless the host country forbid tobacco advertising).

They ran M@r1b0r0 on the car at Indy for most of the first week of practice before getting word that it would have to come off.

Thanks for sharing this. If any of us are trying to build all of the Indy winners, you certainly have set the standard for this one. Jim
