Looking for a little help here. I'm finishing up this car and am looking for some reference photos of the car, particularly the engine. I'll post pictures of my work (borrowing a good camera, I promise ) when it's done.

You just looking to detail the engine (where any Cosworth pic would work) or are you looking to detail the transmission and such where only McLaren pics will do?

Thanks for the pics. That's what I was looking for. I figured you knew where to look. However being a bit color blind, I don't always get the right shades for detail items like engine/transmission parts that call for silver, steel and aluminum. I just go with what looks right to my eye and match as close as I can.

Did you ever have one of those kits that just made you want to yank your hair out? This AMT kit is my Waterloo. It has been since I first did one at age 15. The front wings? Let's just say, I don't know if the designer of this kit was hallucinating but the wings don't match up and need lots of modifying. The turbo looks like something you order at Red Lobster. I didn't even bother with those stupid 2-piece rear tires. The tires from any AMT kit from the 1980s works better. Anyway, this (the real car, not mine) is really a good looking car, I love the paint scheme even if there is a stigma over cars with green in it. That said, I absolutely butchered it. Front wings, engine, suspension, you name it and I probably ruined it. The one saving grace was the set of Fred Cady decals. They made the job salvageable. I like that he made the green areas out of decals and that saved me from having to see a shrink over my lack of detail painting skills.

Stonecold...
Looks great and I agree......That old AMT Kit sucks! I have an old IPMS Article on how to improve that and the old AMT Patrick Eagle kits. The front wings are bad on both. With the old AMT Eagle, the best thing to do is build the engine and rear suspension and buy Bill Jorgensen's body kit for an Eagle.....The best way!
Good looking build!

Thanks Russ. I did see that Bill Jorgenson did the McLaren kit so maybe I should check into getting one. I'm really interested in getting the Eagle since there are so many different cars that can be made. That's what is great about aftermarket decals, they open up so many options. Now I just have to look for more donor cars.

IMHO ... It's more satisfying when you can take an old glue bomb or a badly engineered kit and make it into a nice looking car. These kits are a real test of your modeling skills. This car turned out looking great. Once you've done one of these, you end up appreciating the work that guys like Chris Etzel, Bill Jorgensen and Lance Sellers go through to make their correct versions of these cars. Russ - I hope you can find that old IPMS article about correcting the Eagle and McLaren. That would come in handy.

Hey Stone!!! If you ever need a "donor" kit, juyst let me know! Best to you Russ Thanks Russ. As has been stated here before, I have a glue/paint bomb of this car that I made in my teens. I'm sure there are some suspension and turbo parts missing. I know there is a wheel missing but if a resin kit comes with wheels, that won't be an issue. When I get some time I'll take an inventory on what I need and let you know. By the way, Bill Jorgenson has a 1974-76 McLaren up for auction on Ebay right now. I'll wait a couple days before bidding on it so I can see how high it goes for.

The AMT kit was based on a 1973 McLaren... it still sucks even in that respect, but it's a bit more accurate for 73 than any following years.
Keep in mind that the Gatorade McLaren had different, more sculpted radiator shrouds than just about ever other McLaren that ever ran.

Keep in mind that the Gatorade McLaren had different, more sculpted radiator shrouds than just about ever other McLaren that ever ran. Good eye. In most of the pictures I saw, the 1975 McLaren had angled radiator openings and if I'm not mistaken, the Bill Jorgenson kits have the correct configuration for that car, moreso than even the 1974 winner. The AMT kit that I got in 1976, for the Gatorade car, had the same radiator openings as the kits that were used for both the 1974 and 1976 winners. The AMTs were not the most accurate kits, as the front wings (among other things) and turbocharger parts will show. Overall, a crappy kit that proves that a good set of decals and some imagination can turna a frog into a prince.
