1984 Laguna Seca race complete in one clip. This one is called the "Quinn Coolers 300". Another of Mears missed events as a result of his feet & ankle injuries at Sanair. Penske ran an all red paint scheme on Al Sr's Miller car in this one. Love these old CART races & racecars. www.youtube/user/ArieLuyendyk#p/a/u/0/dPDUSwHXhUY

That was back when Laguna was flat out fast.

Watching this something caught my attention. They said Little Al was going to go to Lotus in 1985. I couldn't remember any Lotus team in that era, especially with Little Al, so I looked it up and found that the team essentially got legislated out. Does anybody know what the car looked like that they built for 1985?
Thanks for posting the video. That was fun to watch.

IIRC I think there was talk that Lotus was going to Indycar. Kinda like how Ferrari supposedly came close in 1986.

This was the type 96 Lotus and it was completed. The lack of finding a sponsor and Lotus's concern over the $ cost of the project led to the plug being pulled. Photos of this car can be seen in the Andrew Ferguson Team Lotus book. Lance

Or, you can see the car here: I read somewhere about Al talking to the Lotus designer about spring/shock ideas. The designer said the car was to run a specific setting at any and every track. Knowing the sorts of splits and asymmetric settings ovals demand, Al responded along the lines of "boy, are we going to teach you something when we get to Indianapolis".
