Trevor, I went through around 5,000 pictures and came up with basically the same 3 pics, I had some great restoration pics of the Sumar spl. during restoration, but nothing to help on this one...Chris |

The main pieces thrown together. I wasn't super carefull as tons of modifications will be required.  Hosted on FotkiThe cockpit side has been closed up. I'm checking the ride hight; seems high. Nice to see Revell has added some kidney bean holes to the wheels.  Hosted on FotkiThe ride hight has been lowered by almost 2mm. Now the fun stuff. I chopped a 1.5mm wedge out of the nose to lower the hood line. Evergreen tube forms the top of the pontoons. Next up is building the lower portion of the pontoons followed by widening the nose cone to enclose the front suspension.  Hosted on Fotki |

Comparing photos and drawings this Belond Kurtis seems to be more the shape and size of Cummins Diesel Kurtis from 1952. The Kurtis 500 is not as wide.

This car started life in 1953 as a Kurtis-Kraft 500b, the Belond Equa-Flow Spl. # 21 driven by Johnnie Parsons . In 1954 It was # 15 Belond Equa-Flow Exhaust Spl. In 1955 it was extensively re-designed and rebuilt by Quin Epperly with the help of Jack Beckley and driven by Jim Rathmann to a 14th place finish. in 1956 it was driven by Bill Boyd and Eddie Russo but failed to Qualify. In 1955 It was the first car to use a two way radio. but it wasn't used in the race.

I didn't expect I would finish in time for the contest but it was good to have a goal. I've had very little modelling motivation but perhaps that will return now that summer is over. I have roughed in the nose with Evergreen strips. The strips were skinned in masking tape then super glue was dumped in and cured instantly with accelerator. Chris has been kind enough to keep digging and came up with this photo...  Hosted on FotkiThe photo shows that the rear bodywork doesn't droop as much as the kit tail piece so a major rebuild is needed. I chose to remove the headrest to make the reshaping easier. The rear bodywork is removed. It will be widened to match the width at the rear tires and raised so the tip is level with the knockoffs. The outrigger for the wider bodywork is in place. I knew the headrest was a little short but was content to ignore it but may as well fix it since I've already cut it off. Something like progress is posted below. More to follow soon. The rear bodywork has been widened and refitted with less droop. I still have to add the bumps behind the rear tires and build up the flat panel at the very rear. Not busy doin' anything are Ya?? I like the Kremer K7 a lot, I did the Nissan r382 a while back I think it was a 1/18th Tamiya or a 1/20th Entex kit. I just downloaded a file on my Fotki titled AVS Shadow that has a bunch of detail pics including the radiator set up on the back. My Dad worked on that car and the "Rollerskate" he is friends with Don Nichols and Jackie Oliver, I think he was responsible for making up the 13in x 15in wheels on the rear and the 13in x9in on the front.. I did see them at the shop before they went to AVS... Is that a vacu-form slot car body?? Very Cool, I have been watching the 1/28th scale Otaki kit but it goes for way too much..The open wheel car doesnt register? What is it? Oh Well Chris |

I was watching the Otaki kit too. It went way beyond my tolerance level. I wish someone would do more of the old Can Am and IMSA cars. I know Formula Canada did some neat ones years ago, but I'd have to mortgage the house to get one!

The F1 car is a Rial ARC1 from 1988 and is based on a Gunze Ferrari. The car was designed by Gustav Brunner and was a virtual clone of his earlier design the Ferrari F1-87.
The Kremer K7 is based on a Tamiya Porsche 962.
The Nissan R381 is a rare ELVA resin kit from Japan; this is the only one I’ve ever seen.
The Shadow is a slot body that will require a ton of work. I want to build the orange test version with dollar signs rather than numbers on the roundels.

Jim Rathmann, who originally was to drive one of the "streamline" cars told me a hysterical story about being one of the first cars with a two-way radio at Indinanapolis....He was going down the back stretch when over the radio, some plumber came on the radio telling to go to 18th street to fix a ladies toilet. He pulled into the pits and said, "It's difficult enough to drive this thing without being told to go fix some ladies john!"
