Drive shaft colors

As I have seen references pictures, and pictures of built models here, I have the following question:

What period did the drive shafts go from a *steel* (or chome) color to the *bronze* looking color?

I believe I first noticed it in the early 90's. However, through the 90's and into 2k, not all halfshafts are bronze color. The colors vary from team to team. It's frustrating at times when you don't have all the references. If you're somewhat anal like me, it can really drive you nuts! Sometimes you just gotta fake it! For most of the modelers on this site even if it were the wrong color, the work is too outstanding to criticize for minor details. Just my two cents.
