Hello everyone. I'm just getting back into modeling after about a 15 year hiatus. I'm going with the Mario K-Mart Lola to get my feet wet. One thing I've noticed while browsing the posts is that a lot of you cut the front suspension off the cars before painting. Why is that? Second, how do you reattach it? I've seen so great builds on here and I'm wanting to do more than the "good enough" builds I've done before. Thanks for the help.

Dustin Go down to the bottom of this page and jump to page 2. Look for the WIP 1988 all Penske front row post. It will answer all your questions. It's not as hard as it looks and the results are well worth it.

The main reason why we cut off the suspension is basically to make the painting and body work easier. IMO it gives the suspension more of a cleaner look. When I'm ready to reattach, I drill holes at the ends and super glue in wire (about 0.028") Shoot!.... I thought I had a picture But I guess not?....Michael did a good demo on his 1988 front row, but his pics aren't there anymore? Well....anyway Make sure you do a WIP and we will help you out as much as possible.

Thanks! That helped out a lot. What is the best way to make sure the holes are drilled into the suspension straight? I've got a Dremel but I'll have to get a much smaller bit to drill it.

Dustin, Straight is not as important as in the right place. If the hole is not quite straight, you can always bend the wire a bit.

Dustin....
The tool you need for this isn't a Dremel...You need to get an X-acto or another brand "Pin Vise Drill"...a small hand held drill with smaller drill bits. A must have tool for any modeler! The reattach the suspension using brass rod.
Best to you!

Just an add on: If you don't cut off those front upper and lower wishbones, it is almost impossible to get rid of the incorrect seam between the body halves. As I have built more of those era AMT models, I have personally found that seam unacceptable. ;D
