The track opened today and 3 words say it all for me. Tickets still available. Indy is not alone. You can still get good tickets for the Bristol night race, and that historically used to sell out way in advance just like Indy. The sport in general is suffering, and the fact is Indy will still be the largest single day sporting event in the world this year.

Having lived in Indy since 1974 and outside Gate 10 since 1997, I have a bit of expirience with race crowds.
It used to be that Opening Day was a big deal. Today looked just like any other Saturday. Traffic was normal and I didn't see many people walking to and from the track. Pole Day last year was better then it has been the past 10 years or so, I can only hope that this years crowd is as big.
However, I could still get tickets the day of the race at the gate.

If you can still get tickets to Bristol that really says it all. I never thought I'd see that!!

Let's also add that the Daytone 500 has not sold out for several years in a row. I believe part of the credit/blame must be attributed to HD TV. The technology is so great that it is actually better in many respects to watch races on TV. That said, anyone who is not at Indy when the race starts, wishes they were. No other race can say that, IMO.

It used to be that Opening Day was a big deal. Conversely, Carb day seems to get bigger every year. I'd even go so far as to say that in recent years it's been the second biggest day of the month of May, even outdoing pole day.

I agree ...Carb day seems to be more populated than I remember....huge party in turn 3 so much so that if you don't show up early you're not parking inside.
