Excellent build. Nice that you changed the road course car to the speedway car. It just looks sleeker to me. Thanks for posting. Tom T.

I had planned to build one as well (Mario though) to go with the road course version I built a few years back. Well done.

Yeah, it is a snap kit.... BUT since it is Tamiya quality, it ends up being one of the better IndyCar models ever produced ;D Newman Haas had them covered that day with only one lap led by someone else. Mario led 27 laps and Nig paced the field for 222 of the circuits. It was deliciously ironic how dominant Mansell was on the ovals in '93. Your build is very well done and the time taken on the detail painting makes the whole build look very realistic. You did a very nice job, I hope you keep up building and posting!! Jordan

I was there that day right in front of Mario's pits. Mario gassed it a little to hard and spun exiting his pit box. He gunned it facing the wrong direction and purposely spun the car back in the right direction. You should have heard the crowd. It was probably the loudest I had ever heard a crowd cheer. It was unbelievably cool. I really wanted to see Mario win that day and with another 20 laps he may have. Nigel looked like he was about to pass out when the race was over and Mario was as cool as ever. Nigel may have been putting on one of his famous (or in-famous) acting jobs though. Regardless of that, Nigel was certainly a racer.
Great build BTW. Makes me want to do Mario's closed course speed record and pole car from the same race.

Jim,
Having built the "road course" version for the long forgotten Motor Racing Replica News, you did one hell of a nice job on this sucker! Somewhere around here, I have a several page pamphlet on how the wire and plumb this kits engine with nice drawings and diagrams in it.
I remember thinking, Tamiya doing a Snap-Kit......and was blown away with how it went together. Nice work my friend.
Best to you!

In my fueler's helmet, I always listened to a handful of select drivers, in addition to my own (Scott Brayton). That day at Michigan, Nigel did not feel well and complained to Jim McGee on the radio of a headache. As the race wore on, they devised a plan to dissolve some aspirin into his drink bottle but Nigel refused, demanding tea. Then he decided against that and sang to him, "Cup of tea, got to pee..." All this was during the greens at 200+ mph and Nigel was just as happy as a clam. McGee, never known for his sense of humor, was not happy at being had on the radio. TRUE STORY.

My thanks to all for your kind remarks. Now that I have figured out how to use the camera and post! Hopefully, now I can join you all with WIPs of cars that I'm working on.
I am also surprised that there haven't been any cottage industry conversions or parts for this car, that I know of, other than decals. I am thankful for the aftermarket decals.

Jim Jim, I have two sets of aftermarket decals for this beast...One set for A.J.'s last Indy ride, and Aire's Scotch ride from 93.......I will not sell the Foyt Decals.....I will the other. Best to you! Russ

Russ - I read your article again last night (Issue 21) Great stuff. I have probably read it 100 times before but it has been awhile. Reading the article always makes me want to build that car again! ;D
I know UMi also did decals for Scott Goodyear's McKensee and DeFerrans 94 Valvoline. Do you have those decals laying around? Sent you a PM

Robby Gordon was in the Valvoline car in '94 through '96. De Ferran was a rookie in '95 and he spent his first few years in Hall's Pennzoil car. De Ferran moved to the Valvoline car after Hall's retired and his team folded as Walker had a to find a replacement when Robby went to NASCAR in '97 to race for SABCO.
I believe UMI did four sheets for the 1/20 Tamiya Lola (Target & Copenhagen, too) and then Up Scale did the Randy Owens scheme car.

That's the Randy Owens scheme car. Buddy Lazier drove it in (IIRC) '94 but it was still a '93 chassis. Jordan

I believe the decals are for the speedway version of the car. It is a beautiful paint scheme for the car. However, I don't think Buddy ever qualified for a Super Speedway race in that paint scheme, which is ashame. I don't know if there are enough of or the proper decals on one sheet to do the roadcourse version. Maybe someone out there may know. I just remember that Minichamps also offered the car in the same Speedway version in 1/43 and 1/18 scale. They were not big sellers and I remember every vendor having them at the Nazareth race and they were practically giving them away. I believe I have one of each left, that I'd like to keep, out of the stash I bought. It took me a long time to sell them.

Lazier did make Michigan but retired 110 miles into the race with electrical problems. He also ran an Ilmor, not a Ford so glue that engine cover down ;D

Jordan, Your correct that he made the 94 Michigan race, but the Lola he was driving was not in the Randy Owens paint scheme. It was a white car with red sidepods.

To be honest Jordan, I wish I had some pictures to post for you of the car Lazier ran at Michigan. I actually had to sit down and watch the video from Michigan and Indy to be sure that the Randy Owens paint scheme was not run at a speedway in 94. I'm surprised that Lazierfan hasn't weighed in on this issue and come up with some pictures for us.

Russ, I would really like to get a copy of that article you did for MRRN if possible along with the wiring and plumbing sheets also if possible. Now for the information on this car when Buddy drove it. The car was white with red side pods for the first part of the year. He did not qualify at indy though. The Randy Owens car made it's first appearance at Mid-Ohio, Buddy was a DNQ(29th fastest out of 32 cars trying to qualify, only 28 were allowed to start) New Hampshire - Did not start - withdrawn/trans problems Vancouver - Finished 27th/completed 16 laps/broken halfshaft(only race Buddy actually ran with the Owens car) Road America - #23 car ran by Giovanni Lavaggi / finished 15th (not sure if Owens car or not) Nazareth and Laguna Sega - Did not start. I have the Owen's decals for the 1/20th scale car. They are done for a speeedway version but could be used to do the R/C version with a little work. The interesting thing is the decals do not say Randy Owens art cards for the side of the side pods, they say St. Andre with the words the water below. This would lead me to beleive this would have had to been from the Vancouver race or the Road America race which Buddy did not drive the car in. I have attached a copy of a picture taken at Indy in 94 of the car in red and white trim along with a scan of the decals. You can see they have different sponsors on the side pods vs. the picture of Buddy driving the car in the earlier post.

Just another interesting tidbit. In 94 Buddy actual practiced in the the Dick Simon Racing #5T back up car at Indy. I have a few pictures somewhere. If I find them I will post a few. The only thing was the car was either a 93 or 92 Lola from what I remember.

Thanks Eric for you insight! I just knew you'd come through for us. "A picture is worth a thousand words!" The picture is great! Maybe you could help us out on what needs to be done to complete the paint scheme of the Randy Owens r/c car? It certainily will help me if I ever decide to do the car. If others
