I pulled this out and splashed some paint on it. It should be a quick assembly. Maybe G. Hill's 64 Monaco winner( this race was the first F1 race I saw on tele and Hill won it! Patrick

Patrick; I'm not worthy...I'm not worthy...I'm not worthy... Man I LOVE your builds; especially the subjects (50's & 60's G.P. cars). I'm presently working on the Fiotti '57 Maserati of Jo Bonnier and if it turns out half as good as these three, I'll be happy.
I missed Hill's '64 win but his '65 win was my first TV g.p. also. They kept talking about Jimmy Clark being at Indy and how it would hurt his chances for the championship(really funny in hindsight). The big rookie in that race was some guy named Jackie Stewart(also funny in hindsight).
There is just something about Monaco...I would love to see it in person but unless one of you has the winning lottery numbers and will share, it ain't gonna' happen...
Again, very classy builds... Tim

I loved those two Cox F1 "static models". Was the other one a 1964 Ferrari? I had huge plans for building them out with engines and detail like we had on the AMT & Revell cars. (probably like your project here will become)
I haven't ever seen them available on eBay or anywhere else, but maybe I'm not looking right.
Thanks for the great visit to memory lane. Rick

Patrick, Your BRM is looking great, can't wait to see you finish it. The BRM P261 is in my top couple of favorite '60's era F1 cars. Wow, what a decade for race cars AND drivers. When Tamiya released their Lotus 25 and Honda RA 272 kits I remember thinking, "Hot Dang, Hold On Newt, Here We Go!" into a series of great '60's F1 kits- more Lotus', BRM's, Brabhams, Eagle, Coopers, Ferraris... but sadly, it was not to be. Maybe their upcoming Lotus 79 release is a sign that they're thinking of the past greats again.

Patrick, please take this as high praise, you are a freak!! I love your builds. Sandy, I agree, my favorite decade also. One quick Monaco story. I had a friend who went there as part of a tour of Europe. I still have the post card she sent me from there. On the card she says, " I was here for a day and never did find the race track" When she got home I gently explained to her that she had probably crossed the track several times during her visit.

Rick: Thar' she blows! Not Moby Dick, but this Cox BRM (go to EBay and type in "early Indy 8"). Talk about "ask and ye shall receive!" If you don't want what appears to be an excellent condition glue bomb with a $9.99 current bid, let me know 'cause I'll bid on it... Best to you, Tim

Patrick,
Are you going to paint the nose day glow orange?

Post by Patrick on Apr 17, 2010 21:13:27 GMT -5
Stu, the nose isn't day-glo although it seems like it! Just a nice competition orange (and Yes!). The car is the #3 Gahrame Hill 1964 Monaco winner just like I saw on the tele way back 46 years( !!!!!) ago. Damn! I really am old! Patrick

A few steps closer... ...an o'all fitting... Finished cockpit... ...pre-finished next...the front end and final assembly. Oh, I hate the decal's silvering so I took them off to try and cut more of the decal carrier off.

Thanks for the suggestion Stu except those are European cut numbers which are not correct for the BRM. The problem really is the uneven finish of the paint on the body. I'll trim the decals and polish the body some more.
As to Sandy's question, it is some Duplo lacquer I'll check the exact type and let you know.

I'll trim the decals and polish the body some more. Actually Patrick, I have Cox BRM glue bomb which I plan to redo someday. I'm interested in what you are doing for decals. What is a "European cut number"? There is BRM decal badge that still might be useful in the link I previously posted.

I noticed the shifter is on the left side. Interesting

Hi Stu,
Well, European cut numbers are the "squared" numbers as on the decal sheet which are great for the 158 Ferrari. I re-trimmed the #3s and re-decaled them...they are a "rounded" type and are more correct for the BRM.
As for the BRM marque decal...poop, it should be a Brit a/c roundal colored blue/white/red and NOT green/white/green, but I use them anyway until something better is in town!
Paint color and progress to follow.

Oh, yes, the shifter IS a leftie shift! There was a left hand shift in my Lotus 18...it was fun to use. I have the Dupli-Color can here and it's DSFM165 "Dark Jade" sorta similar to a Ford Escort I once crashed (LOL). I think it is a bit green and could use a clear blue overcoat. My late-season P261 was done over 25 years ago and I used a Testors candy green with a transparent blue and I think it came out great. What do you think? I leaving both as is. Patrick

Thanks all for the remarks and complements. Well, Graham Hill would like it. He was rare amongst drivers...very good, a gentleman, witty, and willing to do crazy things like dressing in drag for a BRDC dinner. I should have mentioned that the nose is too shallow and needs to be built up a bit. Check a good photo profile. I also added a small nose tip to it to round it out a bit. After finishing the early season car and having them side by side I think I'm going to take the late car appart and modify it so as to make it compare better with the early car. UH...does that make sense? Garcon! Next serving please!

I do know what you mean Russ. Maybe that's why I model them so as to not forget! Now where did I leave that damn x-acto. I just laid it down... Patrick Maybe for the NNL I'll finally do the 1960s F1 grid!

I shortened up the wheelbase and narrowed the front track on the late season Eldon model...looks closer to scale now. Sorry for the crappy photo. Patrick
