Nice start and a cool subject! Of course, I'm a sucker for something with Shell logos Now are you doing Kimi's car or Massa's? Jordan

I already tried it out on a scrap and it looks fantastic! I kinda take that back I'm second guessing myself with the color, once again It looks good but, I dont think its right? I'm going to mess around with the Tamiya Meca red.

Looks GREAT!! I have the same problem when trying to decide on paint colors myself...so don't feel bad. I have been wanting to do a newer F-1 car for awhile but with all of my other projects I just haven't had the time...and at this rate I may never get around to building one. Keep the in progress pics coming.

I'm going to mess around with the Tamiya Meca red. Not the correct color. I've seen the car in person and it was not metallic red (which is what the Mica red is). It was a clear red over a metallic base, and the car constantly changed color depending on the lighting. I think this shot gives a good feel for the color of the car: More shots here: www.pbase.com/indyboosler/2007_united_states_grand_prix

BTW, I'm curious as to why you went 1/25 when this car is available in 1/20?

Automotive Forums have some great looking builds of this car - you might do a search there in the modeling part to get some ideas. One guy put red clear over like a gold base.

I went with this one because I got it for $25 and the fill decals were $5. Basically I didn't feel like spending a whole lot of time or money on it......it was a last minute decision to do this kit and not much money in the piggy bank at the moment As for the color After comparing my test peaces and your pictures TS-74 clear red over TS12 Orange looks the best so far? You said Clear red over metallic but to my eyes there is a lot of orange to it also? Like I said in my first post I tried Silver- Clear Orange- Clear Red, IMO is way to dark? But...I'll keep on testing

Jordan Hey, thats an Idea! I've seen that done and I think it looked good. I don't remember if it was gold-gold or more of a champagne gold. But if you check out www.f1m.com. there's some good solutions over there. But up close the car definitely has a metallic subsurface.

I decided to go with Mica Red > Clear Red > Clear Orange Right or wrong, I dont know? It looks the best IMO Besides I'm getting low on the Clear Red & Orange, my local Hobby store does Carry it, I have to buy it off the Internet, also my white primer, which sucks too. BTW nothing else has happen to this model....I'm out of white primer and I didn't get it yet Which is the next step on this model, the Skoal Bandit, and the PC7.

The paint is on! This is what I did: (Step 1) Two light coats of TS-39 Mica red. Making sure to get all of the hard to spray places first. Then let sit for 5 mins (Step 2) One full coat of TS-74 Clear Red. Then Let sit for 5mins (Step 3) One light and one fast Heavy coat of TS-73 Clear Orange Next step is the funnest: Watching Paint dry! No really, The decals are next. BTW I will not be clear coating this time. The M@r1b0r0 decals cant handle the Tamiya clear? Because I tested the the Bar Codes for a test peace. Besides the decals have a protective clear over them anyway. Yet again these Pictures Lie in what the true color looks like....I will take pictures tomorrow in the True light of the Sun. The 2nd Picture bellow is the closest to the real color. Also these pics aren't showing the Slight Metallic look it has.

Yeah, My Pics dont give the color justice at all. As I'm holding my model up to the computer screen comparing it to Michael's picture below, my paint job is slightly darker, but I think it will match when I see it in some daylight BTW I'm very happy with how it came out.

Calvin,
Just a suggestion, have you ever tried "Future" Floor Wax as a clear coat?
Best to you!

Calvin, from what I can tell the color looks pretty good. Keep in mind that the color varied greatly depending on lighting. Sometimes it looked metallic, sometimes it didn't. Sometimes it looked dark, sometimes it looked bright, sometimes it took on a slight orange hue. Given that when I saw it, the paint job was only in it's 3rd or 4th race if that, I watched it with a modelers eye and it was rather frustrating.

I checked it this morning in the sunlight and it has everything that you have discribed....Dark in the shade......and has a red-orange metallic look in the sun. It looks glorious!

One small tip on using "Future" Floor Wax, make sure your decals are on well! Some rare times, the "Future" as causes some decals to float off.......and it is rare. I have been using this method of clear coating for over ten years thanks to Chris Etzel. It will never yellow either.
Best to you!

All that paint and I noticed yesterday while at the hobby shop Tamiya now makes a specific paint for the F2007 thru F60 Ferrari!! I think it was call Ferrari Mica Red... I also saw a new Tamiya Bright Metallic Silver and Bright Metalic Gold that sell for $17.00 and requires a Gloss Black undercote ala Alclad!!! I am assuming to replicate Chrome just like Alclad.... at $17.00 for a 100ml can I didnt feel like a test was in order!!!

Chris,
I am one of the very few, Tamiya Paint Haters here. Though Tamiya does wonderful kits, they're paint is pure excrement! I would recommend not using it at all!
Best to you!
