I like almost any open wheel car, but that thing is ugly. My $.02 Craig

Sorry to offend your eyes, but I was just trying to find out information on the car, because I haven’t seen it before, nor could I find it in any of my books or pictures. The car wash people didn’t have any idea what type of car it was, except that it was in the Andretti collection. I have a lot of stuff like this I thought would be fun and interesting to share, ugly or not. I have to apologize, because I just learned how to post pictures on this site. If I ever post pictures again, I guess I should ask first, what are your likes and dislikes?
In addition, I just found out from another site, that this car did not run in the 71 Pocono 500 in this configuration. Jim

I don't know what it is, but I'm glad you posted the pics! Sure looks like an expensive place to dry a pair of jeans! I bet Lance will know. It would make an interesting scratch-build project.

Well,
According to "Racing Pictorials of 1971", this is indeed the very ugly ride of Mario Andretti in 1971. It has a great deal of "stuff" added to it thought. It was the car Andertti drove at Indy that was involved in the infamous "Mel Kenyon Incident" during the 500. A bit faded, it's so ugly........(How ugly is it!?!?!?) it's neat looking. The car needs some TLC it seems, but the detail on the Ford Four Cam Engine alone is Worth the photos you posted. Thanks Jim!!! Remember, one man's ceiling is another man's floor. The 1970 McNamara was a much better looking machine.
Best to you!

If it's UGLY...I want to see it (and maybe model it!). The "non-beautiful" cars often times don't get that much coverage... that makes it interesting! Any more gems?

Patrick ans everyone....
I agree it's ugly, but that was the very neat and interesting thing about Indianapolis in the late 60"s and early 70's.....Everyone was trying something different to go faster. Even this ugly POS, give it a try, what the heck. This lead to some of the most beautiful cars in Indy History....like the Eagles, McLaerns and Coyotes......and Mongooses, Clots and such. A wonderfully weird time at the Speedway, which will never happen again, sad to say.
Best to you!

I agree is it not aesthetically pleasing to the eye.... but it is cool because it is different from the other cars just like the Eagle Aircraft Flyer. The EAF never did anything great and no one great drove it but everytime I see a picture of it - I want to scratchbuild one!! ;D

Brian Well, I would've posted who they came off of, but I was afraid she might be too ugly.....bikini day at the carwash! Thanks for your responces. I think these are the neastest cars of Indycar racing, since this was the time I was actually racing Quarter Midgets. I have many fond memories and other pictures from over the years at Pocono and Nazareth. I don't know that I have quite the detail as this car. I too would like to scratch build this car, but I was hoping for some history in this configuration to make it worth the trouble to build. Most of the cars during this time greatly changed configuration from race to race. Like the P.J. Colt, by the time it ran at Pocono it "spouted wings!"(of which I have a couple of picutes.) If you look at this car at Indy it is quite different from what it looks like in these pictures. I'm hoping Lance will continue to work on the one he has pictured in his garage area and release it as a kit along with some of the other ones he is working on. I can only hope and pray.... Jim

Compared to the cars it was racing with, I think this was a very attractive and "modern" looking car in it's original design.
