Not sure how this will look since I'm using Indycals that are probably sized for a 1/25 scale and I'm building a Monogram 1/24 kit. I'm sure it will be OK. In any case, it's my first short oval build. Kind of excited about it. I'll be using 2 sets of decals since there needs to be some extra graphics on the back of the rear wing and on the rear wingplates, there are some other graphics needed.
I'll post pictures after the first coat of paint goes on, probably by Thursday.

This should be fun to watch! But do you want to know something strange? Sure you do! I've so happen to be building the same car in the last 3 days. But with the AMT Lola and its just going to be the normal speedway car.

Should be great. Me, I'm kicking myself for missing some good spray painting weather before leaving town this weekend Jordan

Will there actually be photos in this WIP thread? GYes, yes. I promised to post them after the first coat of paint. I'm pretty sure I said that in the first post of this thread. I'm too lazy to look. But my hockey schedule lightens up for a couple of weeks after this weekend. I'm going to the Blues-Blackhawks hockey game tomorrow night (GO BLUES!!) so progress on this build will be slow initially. Also, Chaparral, I saw the pics of your Hanna Lola. Really nice. I love this car and even 22-23 years later, I still can't believe Mario didn't win Indy with it. Such was the dominance.

I like Andy Murray and hopefully he doesn't get the axe. In either case you guys have a long climb to catch my Kings. If only Mario hadn't "taken it easy"... G

Not to hijack my own thread, but how did Kings fans feel about Andy Murray in his last couple of seasons? Blues fans want to fire him because they think he's messing with the heads of the young players. Was that the perception in LA? Your Kings have a real good team. I've been a fan of Anze Kopitar since he was a rookie. What he's become this season hasn't been a surprise to me. And Drew Doughty is going to battle Erik Johnson for Norris Trophies in the near future. As for Mario, I thought it was a little spring in the fuel system that broke. Could that have been from driving too hard? Oh, look for some preliminary pics of this WIP as early as tomorrow morning.

Much has been made of the "Andretti Luck" at Indy. I say Mario was victimized by the "Andretti Mentality". The real crime, and I love Big Al, was that Roberto Guerrero didn't win. Roberto was a real class act, along the same lines as Gil de Farren. That was my first 500.

I think Andy was fired because the team wasn't winning and missed the playoffs three seasons in a row. Marc Crawford was a total waste of two seasons. Anyhow, as for Indy in '87, a broken valve spring was the culprit and it was later found that if Mario had run maximum power the engine would have lasted the whole race. There was a harmonics problem at lower rpm. The rest is history as they say. I had planned to build this one in 2010 but I think now I'll put it off another year or so. G

As promised, the first pictures of this build. Yes, it is a Monogram so the engine cover looks a bit rounder than the AMT. I used the Chevy engine from a Valvoline March kit so it would be a Lola Chevy combo. Also, I had to use two sets of decals for the extra striping and the Hanna graphic on the back of the rear wing. I like how the wings came out. It took a bit more work but well worth it. I still have to do the engine and wheels. And one side pod is getting re-painted. In the first picture I'm showing the results of a great tip from Russ Bundy. I used Easy Off to strip off the chrome from the wheels, mirrors and fuel filler. This car had black rims and it used to take me forever to get the chrome off so I'd get a good painting surface. The Easy Off is, well, easier. This is the first time I've done the decaling before even starting the engine work. Chaparral has been a bad (good?) influence on me. I like it though. You do get a good picture of what the car will look like when finished. Greg, don't wait to do this car. I enjoy your works and since this is my favorite car, I'd like to see how your's turns out. Spectacular I'm sure.

As long as you clearcoat the decals it shouldn't be a problem, but if not they should be the last thing done.

The Monogram kits came with two sets of wings: one set were speedway wings similar to the AMT kit wings and the other are the set Gregg is using.

The instructions refer to them as roadcourse wings so I guess it's up to the interpretation of the builder to decide. They could pass for either.

Watching the various WIP progress is such a kick and a great learning opportunity. Great work. I like to put my decals on as soon as I can, too. My problem is I sometimes don't completely finish the car.

Is it done yet? Is it done yet? Is it done yet? ;D Back on the job. Sorry for the long delay. I've been dealing with helping my sister, who on Monday had surgery for breast cancer. Thankfully, it was detected early and the prognosis is very good. And she is going home today. I've spent most of my time on Facebook, keeping our friends and family updated. I think Michael Portaro would be the only person on this board that I have contact on FB, so I apologize for not letting anyone else in on this. Unfortunately, I am heading to Detroit tomorrow for a hockey tournament and the model will probably not see my fingerprints until Monday. So look for progress reports by the middle of next week.
