Some great pics there, Bill! Someone should try to get over there with a camera for sure! If my real estate timing had been a little better, I probably could have gone halvsies with someone on one of those, oh well!

I always have heard the story of how Herk waited until the gun went off to end the day and then opened the hood to reveal the cooler! Wish I could have been there to see that. Bill <><

As I heard it, Herk was in his front engine roadster, the very last man to try and make it with one... I guess he knew he was out of luck and went with the cooler idea on Bump Day! LOL!! Someone here has a more complete run down, I am sure.

Even after he gave up trying to qualify the Mallard, he would enter it as a second entry under a friend's name, gave him a second garage for parties and a place for handy beer storage! I highly recommend the Bob Gates book "Hurtubise", it's a great read and has many super pics (all B&W, tho).

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the heads up on the Hurtubise book, I will be on the look out! Any truth in the story that Herk told the Doctors to make his hands able to hold a steering wheel and a beer can after he was burned so badly? ;D

Here's a link to the seller of the Hurtubise book, very reputable seller, used to race a modified at Fonda Speedway (another great book to read!), Hurtubise book is about 3/4 of the way down the page: www.coastal181.com/nlm-working-April-2005/openwheel-1.htmAccording to the book, he told the docs inthe hospital that he made his living holding something round, so fix his hands to be able to do that. Apparently he came up with the "steering wheel & beer can" statement later on in his recovery. He raced again 9 months after the accident when he was given only a 10% chance of survival!
