I'm certainly not a newbie to modeling, though open wheel is a new area for me. Prior to this my focus has been primarily on closed wheel sports car racing (Le Mans, Can Am, Trans Am (1970's), etc. I build exclusively in 1/24 or 1/25, so the selection isn't always as great for me as it would be if I'd include all of the other scales.
My initial foray into open wheel modeling will be a Herb Deeks resin kit of a Cooper Mk IX Formula 3 I picked up off ebay for a very low price (or so I've been told). Interestingly enough, it will be my first resin kit as well, though I don't expect that to be much of an issue - mostly just need to use CA instead of styrene cement and spend some extra time on prep work. I don't like to build "box stock" anyway - there are lots of little touches that can add so much to a model and there are also often mistakes to be corrected to make a model more accurate than the kit manufacturer did (wiring and plumbing the car, opening molded in air intakes, judicious use of aftermarket parts, etc.).
It'll be awhile before I get to it, as I made a New Year's resolution that I would finish all of my "in-process" builds before I start any new ones, so I may be set for most of this year (or longer) before I can get to the Cooper.
Anyway, I'm glad to have found this group and I'm looking forward to participating!
