Okay...I'm breaking my once hard and fast rule. While I wait for the postal authorities to work out everything in Indianapolis, I thought I'd start a Murphy Special for the Display at the Museum from and Old....and I mean OLD Best/Aurora Glue Bomb that you have seen sitting on my work bench from the past photos I have taken. I have taken it apart. This one was a (expletive deleted)! Say what you will for tube glue, I guess when you use a whole tube on one kit like this cat did, on this build....it was meant to last three lifetimes. More on this one later. Best to you! Russ

Okay, this should be fun. I love doing glue bombs over. One of my first was doing over an 74 Olsonite Eagle to Bobby Unser's Pole winning car from 72. The Old AMT Kit. Well, after breaking this OLD turkey apart. I discovered just how old it was. Seems this turkey was made by the old Best Model Company from the printing on the seat. I sanded the body smooth and got rid of the heavy handed surface detail which is unnecessary. Does anyone know what type of paint this piss yellow is? It sure is old, all I know. Best to you! Russ

That Gilmore I'm working on must have used the same stuff. Of course the glue used back then was probably more intense, now the EPA has probably tempered what we use. Remember that citrus stuff that came out in the 70's to stop the glue sniffing..didn't work for anything!

Oh Dave,
I remember that lousy glue offered in the mid 70's. I was excrement and only worked to stop kids from sniffing glue and modelers from building....anything.
By the way, I must say your rebuild of the 1935 Gilmore looks great and I admire your work on the wire wheels on that kit. I may try that idea myself on this Best Murphy Special. I have some wire around here someplace. You're build looks great!
Best to you!

Okay.....Now understand these aren't the tires & wheels that will go on the finished product, but for this photo..... From Glue Bomb to Hall of Fame is finished, well....sort of.... I extended the tail a bit, scratch built the cockpit interior and re-scribed the body...hopefuly it's a worthy addition to the Hall of Fame Display. This was fun........Best to you! Russ

Nice looking glue bomb Russ. They are a bit of a pain to work on, but they are fun to do and make them shine like your work shows.

Thanks Patrick and Calvin,
I almost prefer to work on "glue bombs" these days. You get to work on a old kit and make "improvements" to it at a fraction of the cost that moronic "Kit Collectors" want to charge you. This was an "Ebay Glue Bomb" that I won as part of a collection of old Indy Car Kits......along with the 1935 Gilmore Special I did months ago.
Thanks again!
Russ

Your instrument panel looks awesome! You got all the colors right on!
What did you use for the engine cover/hood straps? They look real.

Your instrument panel looks awesome! You got all the colors right on! What did you use for the engine cover/hood straps? They look real. Calvin, Nothing big...just simple black electricians tape cut to length and the proper width and the instrument panel is done with K&S Brass plate, drilled holes and Fred Cady's decals for the instrument age faces. Look to the tutorial on the 1960 Ken-Paul Spl. car and you'll see just what I did. One of the reasons I like building the "glue bombs." Scratch building the dash is fun! Also, thanks MONGO for the kind remark... Best to you! Russ

What decals did you use for the 1922 winner? Jef, Old Calhoun passed away this past year. If any one knows what decals he used and can help Jef that would be great.

Jef, I built this model years ago using a kit like this that I bought at a swap meet. Fred Cady's decal set #556 includes a medium-to-light blue #35 with a black outline. The car qualified as #8 but ran in the race as #35. Jack Fox's "The Illustrated History of the Indianapolis 500 1911-1994" shows a picture of the winner. There appear to no other markings on the car except for the numbers. Gary Doyle's "King of the Boards The Life and Times of Jimmy Murphy" pp. 162-167 has pictures and a painting of the car during the summer of 1922 showing the placement of the numbers on each side and the tail. A picture at the Tacoma board track in July, 1922 shows the car with Oldfield Cord tires which appear to be gray. Send a self addressed, stamped envelope to Jim Harvey, 1175 S. Smith Road, Bloomington, IN and I will send you the decal sheet. Hope this helps. Jim
