that would be a rare treasure as the first Indy Watson was 1956 ;-) (specifically Pat Flaherty's winner)

It's not a real Watson. It's a custom body built around a 29-L 12 cyl Patton tank engine. You can see a photo here, down near the bottom of the page. www.dupontregistry.com/autos/blog/

According to history.....a nasty thing that will expose the truth, sometimes...Abram Joe Watson became a racing mechanic after serving in WWII as a navigator with the Eight Army Air Corp and worked with his fatter at the Watson Dolly Company in Glendale, CA. The building used to have the name still painted on the side of it as of 1989.
His first trip to Indianapolis was 1948 with not much success. In 1950, Watson got his first car into the 500 with Dick Rathmann as drive. It was called the "Pots and Pans Special" but had the "City of Glendale" painted on the side.
In 1954 Bob Estes wanted a "new" car for his driver, Don Freeland, so he hired both Watson and Jud Phillips to build a car which took on a "remarkable resemblance" to a Kurtis Kraft 500B...some consider this the first "Watson Roadster." The next year, John Zink hired Watson as a Chef Mechanic....So there it is, a brief early history.
Best to all.......
