I ran across this site at Indycals.net. Great site.
I grew up living across the street from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's north 40 lot on 30th St. I could look out our kitchen window and see the grandstand in the north short chute.
I began building and collecting in 1978, an I have continued without interruption since then. Unfortunately, I have not built a model since the mid-'90s, but I never slowed down when it came to collecting. My collection is made up of Indy winners, Indy pace cars, F-1 World Champs, some unusual non-winning Indy cars and a handfull of NASCAR stock cars. I also collect models of cars I have owned. I prefer 1/43 scale, but collect anything that fits my collection.
In 1/43 scale I have 71 Indy winners and 45 Indy pace car models. I built a few, but the majority are handbuilt from the makers. In all, I have about 350 built models and another 200+ unbuilt race car kits - half of which are the old MPC, AMT and Monogram NASCAR kits.
My daily driver is a 2004 Infiniti G35 sedan, but I own a 1998 Corvette coupe that I baby like a child. It's black on black and I have put only 39,000 miles on it since I bought it in 1999. It's seen rain only two or three times and I only drive it on sunny days, like today! Since the exterior of all C5 Corvettes are visually identical, I decided to "update" mine to a "2004" when I put on a set of the chrome '04 wheels. They real jump out with the black. I have loved cars, and racing all of my life and I have produced many automotive television programs on SPEED.
I doubt if I can make any contributions towards building, but I have been an avid reader and collector of Indy 500 / Indy car history. I'm very much into the obscure cars and drivers from 1911 through the 1970's.
Sorry to go so long. I look forward to reading all the posts.
Thanks,
VintageIndy
