Hi all! Attached is a link to my latest conversion. www.stubenford.com/rogerward1966.htmlI took a Carousel 1 Jimmy Clark 1965 winning Lotus and converted it into Rodger Wards 1966 Indycar and last ride car. I removed the Ford V8 and installed an Offy engine from a junk Jerry Grant Eagle that I had. I then purchase a GMP 1/18th scale supercharged engine and removed the blower and snorkel I made a few mods to these two items and attached them to Offy. Many body and suspension mods were then made. I added the scoop to the nose, scratch built the tail cone (lots of Bondo!), engine cover, windscreen and exhaust from plastic tubing. I didn't have any real good pictures of the engine so I pretty much winged it as far as running the wires and hoses. All & all I think the car turned out excellent and is a good replica of the original. My hope is to also convert two more Lotus 38's and do the other Lola team cars of Graham Hill & Jackie Stewart. ;D Thanks and I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I did doing it. Sorry for just the link to my web site. I still can't figure out how to post pictures here. Stu

I forgot that I wanted to give you guys a little history behind the car. Rodger Ward actually won the 1st race of the year in this car. Then he finished 2nd at the 2nd race. He finished 15th at Indy because of handling issues and then promptly retired from racing! He had to be up there in the points standings with such a great start! But, he walked away and has become a new favorite of mine.

Very cool! Die-casts aren't my thing, but I really respect the work that goes in to these conversions. Rodger was a very class act all the way, wish more drivers were like that now!

It is a great conversion Stu! Too bad you didn't cast the body on this one but I'm sure you will have fun with the other ones, too. Just a bunch of time put in this one, I can tell. Maybe you should do a WIP on your next one as it would show everyone just how involved the conversions can get.
Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!

Stu,
Even Rodger Ward would like you build on this one, and he HATED that car! Rodger once told me that he was supposed to drive the number 24 Red Ball Express in the 1966 500...until he did the "dumbest thing I ever did" during his driving career....Wint eh first race of the 1966 Season at Trenton.
Then John Mecom thought he could win the 500 with that car. Rodger knew he couldn't and Mecom went out and hired Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart to drive int he 500 for him, pushing Two Time Winner Rodger Ward to the teams third driver. Rodger had some major league arguments with Chief Mechanic George Bignotti over the handling of the car and told Mecom and Bignotti if they didn't improver the car, there would be two cars coming into the pits at the start of the race....The Pace Car and the Bryant heating & Cool Special. After missing the mess at the start of the race. Rodger was tooling around the track, not competitive and started to think to himself, "This is useless..." and decided to pull into the pits and quit.....The next day, Rodger Ward retired.
I still miss Rodger...He was everything you'd want a 500 Champion to be. He was a great guy!
Best to you!
Russ

Thanks Guys and Thanks for the story Russ! After I saw the restored car I just had to make a replica of it. I do like to build plastic models but I really enjoy making one of a kind diecast replicas as well.
A very expensive and sought after Lotus 38 had to die but I like to think that it didn't die in vain. Stu

Hi Stu,
I can really admire the work you did on that one! It is a SWEET model!
Never tried a die cast, myself, but you did that one proud.

Thanks Lance! I don't think it would be real difficult for you to make a Lola based off your Lotus master. (hint...hint...) ;D

What a great job!! All it needs is a little Duane (racerbrown) sitting in it! BTW, I agree on Lance doing a Lola.

I have been working on the 66 winner on and off for sometime now , body is very close to being done but cockpit and suspension are a ways off yet, have yet to decide about engine detail or curbside. Lance

Thanks you Guys. Yes, I am very lucky that my Dad is still around. He is a retired graphic artist and he helps me a ton. Does everything the old fashion way and hand draws everything. He is amazing but the best part is that we get to do this stuff together. He lives in Missouri with my Mom and I live in Ohio. I don't get to see them very often but it's great that we can stay close through my model projects. Even though he is in his 70's he is still extremly fast and accurate. I have a hard time keeping up with him! Stu

a mental challenge helps to keep the mind fit which helps keep the body fit! my 78 year old mom whips through about any crossword puzzle in just a few minutes. she's a lot more fun to ask about things than just googling them to find some unknown phrase. i didn't really know what three dog night meant but of course she did! duane ;D
