Hi all,
I just got a set of these decals and I noticed the rear tire decals are misprinted. There are 4 Firestone logos and no Firehawk logos (should be 2 and 2). Does anybody have a sheet they can look at and let me know if their's are wrong too? Was this ever corrected?
Thank you,
G

I've got 6 of these sheets (yes, for those that don't know me - it is a sickness) and they are all like that. I don't think any Speedline ChampCar decals ever got reprinted.... Probably best to steal the tire decals from a kit - the only kit that doesn't have Firestones is the '98 Eagle and what you really need for this car is a '99 kit (Max Papis Miller Lite, Mark Blundell Motorola, or Scott Pruett Pioneer) . The sad thing about these Speedline decals is it total ignores that an Open Wheel car needs tire decals for BOTH sides. Even if they'd put 4 Firestones & 4 Firehawks on the sheet, they would only be 1/2 way there. BTW, are yours yellowed? It is easy to pick out the Cartograf printed Speedline decals because they haven't yellowed. Meanwhile, several really cool sheets age very poorly because they came from another printer - these Player's decals included. The nice thing about the Players scheme is Ricambi did the '98 car while JWTBM, IndyCals, and Speedline all did the '99. Due to Philip Morris being Player's US distributor, the new tobacco lawsuit mandated that PM could only advertise one brand starting in 1999. So, PM picked to run M@r1b0r0's on the Penske cars which left the Forsythe team to run Players in all non-US events while Players-Racing.com was used in all US events. JWTBM and IndyCals give you both options while Speedline only gives you Player's decals. Comparing the four sheets is kind of interesting but I've hijacked this enough for now - sorry ;D - you hit my "wheel house" of open wheel stuff. Having a plastic ChampCar/IndyCar kit for the first time in a decade put me in hog heaven so I really ate this stuff up! Jordan

Thank you Jordan.
I knew you would have the answer. I planned to use the kit decals for the tires but was curious to see if the problem ever got fixed. The decals I got are just slightly on the yellow side and were printed by UMI.

I believe it was UMI that did the artwork and probably it was printed at Microscale but I don't know that for a fact. Can't wait to see your build progress in a WIP.... (hint, hint)
Feel free to ask any and everything ;D

I haven't noticed this on any of my Speedline sheets ... yet. Good to know. I keep all of my decal sheets in a plastic container to keep them from the humidity. I've been able to recover a yellowed sheet by exposing the sheet to direct sunlight. After a few days the yellow tends to "bleach out". Not sure why ... maybe its the UV rays.

Here's a partial post from another thread. I put an asterick (*) by all the sheets that yellowed.... though IIRC the '98 Valvoline sheet has yellowed also.... hmmm, I'll have to check that! I might just have to get my camera out but it's really night and day on these Cartograf sheets. I mean, I'm happy to have the sheets regardless of printer but once you see the old sheets versus the Hollywood - you are just like "oh my goodness!! THAT is what a decal sheet is supposed to look like!"Jordan 1998Speedline decalsValvoline - #5 Gil de Ferran (use Visteon kit or dechrome wheels in Target kit) 1999Speedline decalsPlayers* (no Players-Racing.com) - #33 Patrick Carpentier or #99 Greg Moore (use any 99 kit) Budweiser* - #10 Richie Hearn (use any 99 kit with Visteon rims or dechromed Target rims) Miller Lite/Harley* - #7 Max Papis (use any 99 kit with dechromed wheels) Menards* - #22 Robby Gordon (use any 99 kit with Visteon rims or dechromed Target rims) Hollywood - #17 Mauricio Gugelmin (use any 99 kit) Kool* - #26 Paul Tracy or #27 Dario Franchitti (use any 99 kit with dechromed wheels) Target/Superman - #12 Jimmy Vasser (use any 99 kit with Visteon rims chromed or Target rims) 2000Speedline decalsShell - #8 Kenny Brack (use any 99 kit with dechromed wheels) M@r1b0r0* - #2 Gil de Ferran & #3 Helio Castroneves (use Shell or Castrol kit and chrome wheels) Telefonica - #96 Oriol Servia (use any 99 kit) 2001Speedline decalsMotorola - #39 Michael Andretti (use Shell or Castrol kit) Tecate/Quaker State - #51 Adrian Fernandez (use Visteon kit or dechrome wheels in Target kit) *Decals marked with an asterisk have shown yellowing with age. Which car you want to do? What's your donor? Your decals are for the '99 car or do you want to do the '98 car? He won 3 times in 98-99: 1998 Rio 1998 US 500 (Michigan) 1999 Homestead (no video of his '99 win on YouTube but here's the exciting '98 finish) You could customize a car for Rio by laying down the wings on the road course setup. You could customize a car for the Michigan setup by scratch building a Handford Device. Sadly, the '99 Homestead car had one off graphics that have never been done in decal - I think Forsythe was caught off guard about not being able to use Player's.... I dunno!?!? That rules! Thank you for the link and the pics/vids. I'm leaning toward the road course set up since I think it looks better than the speedway version but the other 2 Reynards I built (Bud and Castrol) were built as road course cars so who knows. As of now, I have the Castrol, Shell, Pioneer, and Visteon cars to choose from as the donor. G

If it were me, I'd say the Pioneer kit would be best donor as it's a '99 car (sidepod and wing differences) since the Player's decals are for the '99 season. But if not, the Castrol car has the right type rims, too. Really, you should know that even though the decals were meant to be '99's there is really no difference to the '98 scheme so it's really up to you which kit you want to be a donor.

I am learning a good bit from this thread! Now, I have the Player's decal sheet from Indycals and I have a Castrol, Visteon and a Miller Lite kit. I wish to do the last ride of Greg Moore. Will I need to find a Pioneer kit to be as accurate as possible? Also, will the correct wheels be in one of my existing kits? How about the Hanford device? I am so out of the loop on the modern Indy car I was not even aware of its existence. Can someone post a close-up picture of one so as to educate this geezer? I believe it is a rear wing modification of some sort...Thanks in advance!

Hi Brother Bill,
The Hanford device is the head restraint isn't it??? (if not, the head restraint sounds a whole lot like that!) I am guessing from a poor memory..........

Bill, you're thinking of the HANS (Head And Neck) device. The Hannford device was a strip they attached below the rear edge of the wing to reduce the wing's effectiveness, as far as I can tell it just disturbs the air flow under the wing. I've seen pics somewhere, it'll come to me!

Bill H The Miller Lite kit will be perfect - just FYI, the Motorola, Pioneer, and Miller Lite kits are all exactly the same kit - same chrome BBS wheels, updated '99-spec wings, and updated '99-spec sidepods. The Handford Device was a specially designed rear-wings. At Fontana in 1999 they were using the first of its the iterations. Don't use this to build with - I will look up my reference later but here are some cross sections of the different types of rear wings run at this time so you can kind of see what we are dealing with: The Handford Device was a wedge so it offered very little downforce and then it had a flat back that extended below the wedge wing so that gave the car some lift and punched a HUGE hole in the air. It gave the lead car tons of extra drag while enabling following cars to draft and slingshot with ease! Very cool watching it race! Here you can see the Handford Device's profile in the below pic. HTH - keep the questions coming guys! Jordan
