I was 13 when I went to Indianapolis in 1989 and there are 2 cars I will never forget. Emmo's car and Braytons Amway car. I tried building this model in 1990 but when I went to clear it, all the decals lifted and I put it back in the box. Now at 33 with 3 jobs, a wife, a house, & 2 kids, I took another shot at it.
I started with an unopened AMT kit & went from there. If you notice, as most of you have, the pictures on the box are of the '89 car when AMT used an '88 lola. The T-89 of Michael's 1990 K-mart is like somekind of hybrid which isn't even close to an '88, '89, or '90, if looking for accuracy. So I made the modifications to the rollbar area to better reflect an '89 lola. I also knew I was going to "super detail" this car & I wanted to make it like it ran at Indy. In comes the Monogram Mac Tools Buick engine (good for something). I kitbashed the motor to the AMT transmission. It's not as easy as it sounds but after cutting here, shaving there, I ended up with a block & trans setup the looked like it came with the kit. I shaved the Buick valve covers down, & built the plenium from scratch. I managed to find some pictures of an 88 indycar for sale with a Buick on racecarsforsale.com and used this as a guide for the plumbing the motor. The wheels & tires are actually from the original car I was trying to build in 1990. The lettering on the tires are SHABO. The pictures that have the pink hubs is what they used on the car towards the end of the race. I made the Buick emblems & USAC stickers on my regular HP printer along with resizing the Speedway logos to fit in the white space better. I even made more blue & pink stripes because the original is not long enough. For paint I used good old Rustoleum Flat White, Flo. Pink & Sail Blue right from the can over Model Master Gray Primer. It's a heck of lot cheaper than anything out there & works like a dream. Once all the decals were on, I cleared it with Rustoleum clear so it's going to last for years.
If you guys have any questions about anything, please let me know because I want to see more Indycars built by you guys with any help I can offer. Hope my pictures show up.
Also, just got my decals from Mike yesterday for '07, '08, '09 winners. I'm planning on building these for the museum display so I need to send out a PM for the details.
Lastly, If anyone out there has a set of decals of Emmo's '89 car that I think Speedline made, I would like to buy them from you, or at least get a scan emailed to me.
You can look on FOTKI and my user name is SCHICK5150 till I can figure out how to put the pictures on here.
Thanks,
Mike
