You have probably figured out what I am doing here. Gary Doucette kindly gave us most of the 1930s winners so I am trying to get my decade finished. Bill Cummings grew up and lived near the Speedway. The racing bug bit early since Bill's father was a race driver and Bill promised his mother that one day he would win the Indianapolis 500. His 1934 winner was a Miller front-drive owned by Mike Boyle configured to a two-man body and powered by 220 CID built using Miller Marine parts. In 1935, He finished 3rd in the same car. Kelly Petillo qualified fast enough for the pole in 1935 but the time was thrown out because he had too much fuel. Starting 22nd, he took over the lead when Rex Mays pits after 60 laps. They dueled for the lead for the next 150 miles until Mays dropped out. Wilbur Shaw challenges Petillo, who is aided by a yellow late in the race because of a light rain. They finish 1-2. Petillo was a dubious character ending up serving a prison sentence in Indiana and being banned from the Speeday grounds in 1959.

Beautiful work on both of these Jim. They look awesome together. You really bring Gary's kits to life.

While Gary's kits can be a bit of a challenge, you've really done these proud! Thanks for sharing. Duane

Jim: ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ The โJunk Formulaโ was an interesting period in the history of the 500. You have done an outstanding job on these 2 winners! Excellent builds! Gary would be pleased! Tim

Stunning builds James!
What color did you use for the 35 winner? I've seen it built in white, creme, even yellow.

Thanks for asking. I used Model Master Light Ivory #2709. I am an old-fashioned rattle can guy and also have a bottle for tight places and touch-ups. The can I used was several years old and I was lucky to get a decent finish. I also used this on Bill Jorgensen's Wilbur Shaw "Paycar," which I will get around to sharing one of these days. Jim
