I know very little about how, when and where carbon fiber started appearing in Indycar and/or F1. Is there a good place I can go to read about it?
Also, was fiberglass used for things like body panels? And if so, when did it start appearing?

Carbon fiber goes back to the late 60s, but was not really incorporated until the early 80s. The Renault RE20 had some carbon fiber on the tub in 1980 around the fuel tank and inside the cockpit, I don't know if the same is true for the very similar RS10 from 1979. Interestingly enough the RE30 went back to a full aluminum fuel tank

March put out an all C/F chassis for Porsche in the late 80s (I always forget which year 89ish I think)and CART banned it since all the other cars were hybrids of aluminum and carbon fiber. Starting the next year, all cars were C/F and have been since.
