Kyle, that looks amazing! Gold can be a pain to paint.
Is the red on the nose paint or a decal?

Kyle: Ho hum…another outstanding build… do you ever sleep? Very well done, particularly with the gold paint.
Interesting tidbits: 1) Driven by Ronnie Bucknum and Dick Hutcherson 2) Bucknam won the Indycar race at Michigan in 1968; also drove Honda formula 1 car 3)Hutherson was a NASCAR guy contracted to Ford, so he was sent to LeMans when Ford briefly quit stock car racing. He won 14 NASCAR races between ‘64 and ‘67…would later become crew chief for David Pearson’s 1968 & 1969 championships, then General Manager of Holman-Moody, and finally a very well known chassis maker (Pagan/ Hutcherson) who built cars for Foyt, Waltrip and others…
Therefore, third place in the 24 Hour was taken by a stock car guy and an open wheel guy…
4)This is the race that caused Surtees to quit Ferrari. He got bumped from the “rabbit” car, bitched to Enzo, and then left. I just love how motor racing used to be so entangled that different guys raced everywhere…
Beautiful job Kyle! Keep up the good work! Tim

Keep up the good work! Tim Thanks a bunch Tim! I do sleep. Work and sleep remain the two biggest thieves of my time at the bench. I hate it. Ha! I appreciate the background info as well. I will add my history lesson below. Researching the subject is always a favorite part of the build for me. The driver pairing, as well as the stunning gold livery were two of my main reasons for choosing this car. The other was the interesting history of this chassis. P/1016 was delivered to Holman-Moody prior to the 1966 season in standard Ford Racing white with black upper nose. This is how it raced at Daytona. Driven there by the aforementioned Honda duo of Bucknum and Richie Ginther it was outfitted with an experimental 2 speed automatic transaxle, the PowerShift. This failed the talented duo by the 13th hour and they were out. Before Sebring Holman-Moody had it painted the iconic gold, but retaining the black upper nose and with black side stripes. This was also when the large rear brake snorkels were fitted. Bucknum would be joined by AJ Foyt for the 12 hour. Brake issues plagued them and they had to settle for 12th. This was the end of the PowerShift experiment and it went back to the normal manual transaxle before Le Mans. Moving to Le Mans it was repainted again with the high vis markings on the nose, and the white striping. The car was quickest of the Holman-Moody entries but slower than the Shelby American cars. More brake issues plagued Bucknum and Hutcherson and they fell several laps down. Towards the end of the race things were finally going smoothly and they worked their way up to 3rd, some 12 laps behind the Shelby American duo of McLaren/Amon and Miles/Hulme. Following Le Mans it made the rounds to Ford dealerships as a promo vehicle before returning to the track one more time. The 1967 24 hours of Daytona was the last time it would race with yet another legendary duo Mark Donohue and Peter Revson. Mechanical failure knocked them out early and after testing for Le Mans as the B spec test car it was returned to Holman-Moody. They donated it to the Harrah's collection and at some point after that collection was sold off it was misidentified as chassis P/1015, the Miles car. For this reason it spent many years painted pale blue instead of gold before during one restoration the mistake was realized. I just found that short, 4 race career, the automatic transaxle and the drivers of this car fascinating and I'm glad to have it up on the shelf.

Kyle: Forgive me for hijacking your thread. I am so fascinated with this era I forget my manners…please keep posting the cool stories: I had never heard of the 2 speed automatic transmission … Tim No reason to apologize Tim!! I love the history and the conversation!! Hijack away on any and all of my threads. The auto transmission was not what could be considered a success and as far as my research went it truly went the way of the dodo and they never tried it again.

Have heard pretty good things about the big one too. Well done sir! I always enjoy seeing what other subjects people work on in addition to open wheelers. Thanks for sharing. Duane Thank you!! Had a lot of fun building this. I get into a little of everything. My nephew has requested the Top Gun hero plane for his birthday so I’m currently elbows deep in an Academy F14
