Hello, This is a rather embarrassing question to ask, but I'm in the middle of working on Jim Hurtubise's 1959 Racing Associates Kuzma Dirt car using the Chris Etzel kit. It's coming along fairly well, but I'm stuck on step #10. I don't know if this is the case with all instructions, but mine came in black and white, and some of the photos are a little dark, so it's hard to see all the details that he shows in the photos. I've installed the plastic top part of the firewall, but I have no idea where to install the bottom, photo-etch portion that he talks about. The photos don't seem to show anything that gives me an indication of where to put it, but I could also just be dense . If anyone can send me photos of their built models of the Kuzma so I can see where to place the lower firewall portion, it would be helpful. I can provide the photo of the instructions if anyone needs it. I really want to continue on the kit, but I don't want to leave any details out!

That's exactly where I thought it would go! Thanks! I didn't want to assume it would go there, since the instructions don't seem to actually show it. It's cool to know someone is doing the exact same car! I don't think I've ever seen photos of someone doing the Hurtubise Kuzma. I'm sure it's been done before though!

Chris' kit "engineering" was second to none, everything pretty much falls into place as intended. A little test-fitting before final gluing and you're golden. The most major thing you need to do is clean out holes where indicated.
Are you going to fab the tube shocks on the front? I'm intending to reproduce Herk's Sacramento winning car, including the stone guard.

I'm going for the Sacramento car too. I'm not sure how to make the stone guard to be honest. I've only been making cars for a few years, and haven't done much scratch-building. I'd like to have the stone guard, but not sure where to start with that!

Landoflogic: Stone guard like this? Rough grill screen cut to same shape as Radiator opening. Use Evergreen small rod (or aluminum) and attach to both sides of the nose. Glue screen to supports… I can post more pics if necessary. Love an Indy roadster on dirt at Phoenix… Only way I’ve managed so many unusual cars is scratch building. Just start…it will amaze you because you should get better with each attempt! Tim

Very cool!! I have just recently picked this kit up and no doubt this thread will be a help when I build it. Beautiful machines. Also Tim that’s a super cool dirt roadster.

What size of Evergreen rods would you recommend? I may also use the rods for a roll bar, so recommendations on size for that would be helpful too. Lastly, did this Etzel kit come only with black and white instructions? I have his Monroe kit and it came in full color, which makes me wonder if I have a photocopy of the instructions! This kit is really fun to build, but trying to make out the black and white photos is really challenging.

I had planned on using small diameter brass rod for my stone guard. Probably around .020 dia. Brass or aluminum screen, and a single strand from a small gauge stranded copper wire to attach the screen to the stone guard frame. As for the roll bar, .062 (1/16") rod would be best, IMO. I've never seen the Kuzma instructions in color, I have 8 of them!

Progress is being made. Initially it looked like the wheels were far apart at the rear despite my following the measurements, but once I added the rear radius rods, it looked good. I had the wheels on it temporarily to make sure everything was level. I've had issues with keeping the wheels level in the past. Not sure if it is the wheels on this kit, or just how well made all the parts are, but everything is nice and even.

Maybe this will help with the stone guard, maybe not! kip That does help! What is everyone's stance on clear coating over decals for this car? I typically do it to protect the decals, but I don't know how the decals will react to the Tamiya clear coat. I've applied Micro Sol several times without any issue.

I used to use Tamiya gloss clear coat for everything with no problem (including this car) but I had one bad experience that ruined a paint job. The decals were fine but it wrinkled the paint. Since then I have used acrylic clear coat (usually Model Master with a air brush) and have had no problems. Good luck.

I have managed to lose my pitman arm. It was in my hand, I dropped it, and watched it fall, but have been unable to find it. It's somewhere in my work area, but after a lot of searching, I'm convinced it fell into the void.
Any suggestions on what to do for a replacement? I found a guy who sells 3D printed ones for dirt cars. Really though, I just want to find the original one.
