Rich MacDonald - son of Dave MacDonald - passed away yesterday after a 14 month battle with cancer.
Rich did post here a couple times - probably about 10 years ago. I got to meet him and his mother Sherry when they came to the 500 in 2016 - it was Sherry's first time back since that awful day in 1964 and it was Rich's first time at the 500. They could have been bitter but they embraced the event and the community. They both had an incredible positive energy about them, and we did become friends. Sherry was 78 when I met her and I couldn't believe she was Dave's widow - she still looked so youthful and vibrant, looking a lot like she did in 1964 but with white hair instead of brown. She could have passed for Dave's daughter. Sherry passed away from cancer a few years ago but Rich became a regular attendee of the 500. You never saw whim without a smile on his face. Rich made it his mission to educate fans about his dad - who was an amazingly accomplished driver. I know I myself learned a lot about Dave because of Rich. Rich is survived by his sister Vicki, wife Lisa, and his children and grandchildren.

Sorry to hear this. I’ve seen some truly great interactions with Rich on various internet places over the years. And his dad sure got an undeservedly bad rap. A big loss to the community to be sure.
