I will never forget looking through the binoculars watching for the red car to come out of turn four only to see it lose its back end and streak down into the inside wall. After all these years I still held on to the newspaper clippings and the program from that fateful day. I had to build a car in his honor. Attachments:

Beautiful job! Is that from AMT kit? It looks like a Bill J kit except for the windshield which looks a little thick.

I'll never forget that race. Ironically, according to most reports, Swede died from tainted blood in a transfusion and not directly from the injuries sustained in the crash. Has anyone else heard that?

I thought he passed because of lung damage from breathing the flames and smoke from the crash. A sad day all around. Remember when racing was dangerous and sex was safe?

Stonecold is 100% correct. Savage was a pretty tough guy. He was even reportedly sitting up and joking with the nurses and orderly the day before. From what I have heard, the transfusion got him.
At the time I lived about 12 miles from MIS and had watched him drive in Trans-Am as well.

it is an old AMT kit. I finally kinda sorta got it right. Under the skin it is fully wired and there are hand made belts as well. The windshield is a bit thick but I just didn't want to tangle with that.

Dauntless...
Very nice build of that old and lousy AMT Eagle kit. You can polish a turd, once in a while if you are real good, and it's obvious you are.My older brother went to high school with Sweede/(David)and he told me he was one hell of a football player there. I have heard many reasons as to why he died, but odd to think that the same piece of wall that Sweede hit also cause the Sachs/Mac Donald crash some 9 years earlier.
Again, nice build my friend and best to you
Russ

I believe in Steve Olvey's book Rapid Response he confirms that it was a transfusion that killed Swede. AFAIK his injuries - much like Ronnie Peterson - weren't considered life threatening.

If you act quick maybe you have him make another windshield up for you. Bill's windshield won't fit on the AMT kit. The cockpit opening on the AMT kit is rounded at the front. The actual Eagle's (and Bill's kit) is more squared off.

Michael, I was thinking the same thing in regard to the similarities to the Ronnie Peterson accident. Eerily similar circumstances.

Good discussion on a good topic. So here is a trivia question: Sports Illustrated had a story about the 1973 Indy 500. IIRC, they had the Swede Savage radio transmission to his crew shortly before impact. What were those words?

IIRC, it was actually "Holy Christ, what a mess!" Michael, you are a wealth of info.
