Gentlemen: While cleaning up an old model kits pile, I came across 2 (old ) AMT Lotus kits that surprised me by being almost complete. I decided to make one into Jim Clark’s second place car, and the other into the Firebird Special (after Juanjo found a decal sheet). The vast majority of us have built the old Lotus “way back when.” I remember using my mother’s thread for the spark plug lines🤣🤪😵💫. The kit had problems: the tires were huge, the nose was too flat, many decals were missing, mirrors in the wrong place and incorrect exhaust. Whew! I started to change the exhaust, but I just liked the originals better…should bring back some memories… This is the set asides for the Marshman car… A ways to go but fun so far! Questions, comments welcome! Thanks for stopping by! Tim

Sweet! I’ve always wanted to build one of these even if just for the nostalgia of the old tooling. Can’t wait to see them Tim!

A kit very close to my heart Tim. Looking good! I’m zooming in looking at engine cover pieces for the Marshman car. I’d love to hear more about your process in creating it. Also, are you using Michael’s yellow stripe for Jim Clark’s car? If you’re painting, what paint are you using that matches up with the numbers a the ring around them?

Paul: I am using Michael’s yellow decals…they hold the color extremely well… I saw Juanjo make an entire car body using strips of plastic. I decided that I could curve the parts while gluing…this is backside view… Picture of side bulges…plastic and putty smoothed to shape… Top view on wheels/tires… Finally beginning to look like the Firebird Special… Where we are headed… Comments, questions welcome! Tim, I can’t tell for sure what kit you got the Ford DOHC engine from. Modified AMT with exhaust from MPC?

Paul: The Ford 4 cam is a 3D printed one from Mike Bugel on the Indycar Board. The exhaust is from a one of Lance’s kits… Tim

Nice little project. Using strips works fine. Another method is take something the right diameter, like a pill bottle or paint jar, and very thin (sheet of photo paper thickness) styrene sheet, wrap the sheet around the buck, apply some cement and wrap another sheet over it, until you get the thickness you want. When the cement cures the laminated piece should hold the curve, just machine your part out of it.
(I used to build stringers for circular staircases that way, laminating sheets of 1/2" plywood together).
cheers Paul

Moving along nicely! Always glad to see you work your magic. Homemade tank on left side?
What tires are you using Tim?

Paul: Thank you! I learn something new almost every day. I may try this… Dan: Yes, the side tank is scratch built…the tires on Marshman are Norm’s “”big and littles” bought a decade or so ago…Michael’s gold ring decals…the 63 tires were Calvin’s and came with the nose and windscreen.Michael’s 63 Firestone decals were used on those… Tim

Gentlemen:
Crud, crap, poo-poo, etc. Juanjo’s decals worked great until the nose surround and stripe…then dissolved into a million pieces…I don’t understand why some work and some do not from the same decal sheet(?) So I need the nose decal and numbers…anybody got a spare Marshman Firebird Special decal? Thanks in advance! Tim

Sorry this happened Tim. Unfortunately I don’t have this one in my collection. As far as I know Fred Cady is still with us and the last I heard he was not producing decals but was still selling what he had in his inventory. A few years ago his policy was for you to send him a self addressed stamped envelope and he would send back a list of available decals and prices. You are looking for sheet 551.

Good luck! Hope it all works out. Paul Erlendson

Gentlemen: As it turns out, I have good friends offering help, and now, a new source for Ford 4-cammer… 1) While designing and making 3D printed model kits, Juanjo, in his spare time(!) is making a corrected decal sheet for the Marshman car…We owe Fred Cady a debt of gratitude, but the age is catching up with his sheets, and most were researched Before The Internet, so some colors and specific decals are guessed at. 2) Mike Bugel , who I DON’T think is “Mad Mike,” made the 3D printed Ford 4 cammer that I used in my Marshman build. He is currently redesigning the exhaust (I used the old Olsonite Eagle exhaust). He is planning a trans kit with 4 cammer, oil tank, correct tires, decals and body mods to make the Marshman car… 3) Whoever “MadMike” is, his 4 cammer is Supersweet!
Currently, I am in Windscreen Hell 🤬🤬🤬on my builds while I wait for decals… Thanks for stopping by… Tim
