Just read it on ESPN. ChampCar champion of 2000 & 2001 then Indy 500 winner of 2003. Also, he set the closed course speed record in his Team Penske Reynard Honda when qualifying for the 2000 CART season finale at Fontana.

Very sad news for anyone to pass away at 56. He had that professorial demeanor and classy persona that's rare in American racing. RIP Gil. You were one of the greats.

Showed him race when he started, year was 1993, in F3000 at the great Pau french city track.I have just learnt that he was Brazilian/French
