On this date, 15 October, 1964, Craig Breedlove set a new record: the longest recorded automobile skid--six miles!
The braking parachute malfunctioned at 400 mph, sending the Spirit Of America into a skid at Bonneville, stopped only when the "car" hit a brine pool.
When the rescue team arrived, they found Mr. Breedlove climbing out of the car, and heard him say "For my next trick, I shall set myself on fire."
