Michael,
Looks great !!! You are right about the beef with this model. The egine cover fit is not very good and with no bottom half of the tub makes it very difficult to display this model with the engine cover off. My next one will be built curb side, I started another one at the same time I started my Skoal build ( Rutherford's 86 March ) I was going to be done the same as the Sneva car but after all of the work needed to build the bottom half of the tub and fill the side pods the Rutherford car will be curb side. Once again great build keep the photos coming.

Saw this on Facebook and glad to see it here, too. Thanks for the feedback on the kits, this kind of information is what helps others!

Looking good Michael! Who's decals did you use? (Just Kidding...) I have always like this kit, many cars, as we have seen recently can be built from this kit. I still think it is one of the better late 80"s efforts.
Best to you

Looking great Mike! One of my favorite Indy stories and cars. After placing a third at Indy and eigth at Pocono in 86 for Rick Mears. The chasis would sit as a display in a hotel until called to service for the 87 Indy 500 for Al Unser, who had been out of work. The car would ultimately take Al for his fourth victory at the Brickyard. Unser would place second in the Michigan 500 to Michael Andretti and would crash the car in turn three at the Pocono 500 as Rick Mears would win the race in his March 86c. Yes, it is a car with some history.
As far as the engine cover, I actually did what you did Mike, I then pinned the leading edge of the cover and drilled a small hole in the back edge of side pod. When fit into place it keeps the snuggly fit to the sidepod. I did the same for my 88 Mears car.

Yes, it is a car with some history. Jump ahead another 9 years for another tie in to this car: It is my understanding that when Scott Brayton got killed in 1996, John Menard approached Al Unser about taking over the ride for the 500. Al replied that he was firmly retired, but keeping in mind that he got his fourth win because of Danny Ongais' misfortune, he suggested that Menard put Ongais in the car, which he did.

Mike,
What putty did you use? My Squardon putty I think would just a bit too brittle for what you are doing. I have some Miliput, would that work?
Also, I suppose you filled the gap with the putty with the engine cover on. How did you avoid the putty sticking to the tub?

Looks fantastic! It is nice to see how your talent evolved from the first time you did this build to what it is today.

WOW!
Michael,
These only shows you evaluation as a craftsman, but the proper decals do make a HUGE difference! Nice work my friend.
Best to you

Hey Mike,
Looks great! I think the extra effort in filling the seams and fixing some of the fit problems really paid off. Those subtle additions make the difference, along with proper decals.

Mike, looks great! I built the one in the Indy display, which does not lookk as good as this, but I remember Russ B/oldcalhoun talking me into building the kit. I also rememeber both Russ and I were surprised about the RIGHT side of the car on video. The "Cummins" lettering on the right side is in all caps - CUMMINS, not Cummins, as on the wing and Left side! I'm sure most everyone knows this, or will see it during research, but if I recall, the kit is WRONG, and I ended up using Fred Cady's decal for the right side. (I think - been a LONG time since I built it!) And no, it's not a slight to Mike, his decals weren't available at the time!!! ;D - Wonder if it was done to be more visible to the crowd??

Hi ya Tom!!!!!!! I remember that. I wish we had Indycals back then!d the real reason for the all block capital letters since you built that sucker some 15 years ago. That was the Television camera side so the Cummins Company wanted their sponsorship of the car to be seen on TV and ABC during the race. No one gave the car a chance of winning....so much for experts, huh? This past year was one of the only years my pick won the race.......all those years rooting against Penske didn't do my winners pick average very well....did it? All though I did pick A.J,. winning in 1977 and I still ave the audio tape of that race. I was so sure he was going to win....I bet my history teacher that he woukld and had to pay for a class party because he did...no test that week....made a few Foyt Fans in that US History class in 1977....LOL Good to see you my friend!
