Gentlemen: On the car; anybody got any ideas about transforming the louvers on this car from external to internal? Jerry(1961 redlegs) is trying to reverse engineer it by putting Milliput on the existing louvers, making a replacement piece, cutting the old ones out, and installing the Milliput new ones. I thought of decals but don’t know how that would work? Other side being experimented… Any and all recommendations are welcome. I’ve never encountered this before… Thanks in advance! Tim

Good question! I think a decal COULD work, with a dark line and proper shading, but integrating the body color into a generic decal would be tricky. I thought Archer had some, but apparently not. I'll keep thinking & looking!

I stand corrected! Just looking in the wrong category! Archer DOES have resin louvers, in N, HO & O scale for model railroaders, but unfortunately, none in G scale which is about 1/25. They are external louvers, but might be of help in making a pattern as Jerry is trying to do. A bit pricey, tho.

Gentlemen: Jerry (1961 redlegs) has found a decal that should work… He sent me a sheet (Thanks Jerry!) so I have brought this one out of “the pile.” I want to build Fangio’s 1949 San Remo winner… The only change will be the #18 for the San Remo race… Fangio is always in the Top 3 of F1 drivers. He was an interesting guy. Drove stock cars mainly in over-the-road races with great success. This caught the attention of the Argentine Automobile Club and the Juan Peron-led Argentine government, so they bought a Maserati and sent him to Europe in December 1948 to continue his career. He would turn 38 that June. For perspective, Graham Rahal would have to wait 4 more years before BEGINNING his career! He would be 47 when he retired; again for perspective, Helio is 48… His 5 WDC’s were with 4 different teams…Schumacher, Hamilton, Brabham, Stewart,G Hill, Fittipaldi, Lauda, Piquet, and Prost all won WDC’s with 2 different teams… Comments, questions welcome! Thanks for stopping by! Tim

I’m looking forward to seeing this one completed! I’m currently doing a Harry Schell 4CLT and it will be neat to see these finished.

Guys: This one is coming along… Remember, this is a privateer car without much factory support… Fangio in 1949, would win 7 major “Grand Prix” races…not bad for a European rookie! Comments, questions, welcome! Tim

Looks very nice so far! I have one in primer (been in primer for 15 years!) that might look good in blue & yellow! What are you using for decals?

Brian: Top decals from Gary; bottom louvers from Jerry (via 3Amigos)… There are variations on the car… Tim

Gentlemen: This one turned out waaaay better than I thought it would…began back in August; told Jerry it was moved to “the top of the pile” in early November when he sent decals…so here she is…finally… This 4CLT type was used extensively after WWII… Car bought by… This is also another car that used the tubular frame to carry the engine coolant… Rear view… Since the kit is curbside, here’s a photo of the real engine… Fangio would turn 38 in June of 1949, when he first competed in Europe…this car was so consistently at the front, that when the 1st true Grand Prix system was set up in 1950, he was brought onto the all conquering Alfa Romeo team, where he would win his first championship in 1951… Comments, questions welcome! Thanks again to Jerry and Gary! Tim

Excellent build of a colorful car, from an era when many were pretty plain & boring looking! Great choice of project, honoring one of racing's first "Superstars"!

Tim, your Maser turned out incredible. It’s a beautiful tribute to Fangio! I’m glad I could help.

I didn’t get “El Maestro” painted in time for the final photos, so here he is… My wife asked”What’s he holding?” I said a water bottle before the race, OR champagne after.” Mechanic is checking tire wear… The original photos are in Photobucket Jail, so this is another of his greatest cars, 1954 Mercedes streamliner… As a reminder, Ayrton Senna said Fangio was “the GOAT.” Thanks for stopping by and all of the nice comments! From the look of the tires, let’s hope it’s Champagne after the race. 😂 Nicely done!
