Ok, what is the best color to replicate the Blue Crown Specials from '47-'49?

DrDave,
Judging from the video tape I have of the Blue Crown and the photos I took, it's very close to the good old Dupi-Color Lt. Blue I have had for a long time......a GM Color.
Best to you

That is exactly the color I am using on the '49 winner for the display, Duplicolor Lt. Met. Blue in the big Truck, Van, and SUV can..

It is my understanding that the color was not same each year and "grew" progressively darker. The 1949 car was darker than the 1947 car.

It is my understanding that the color was not same each year and "grew" progressively darker. The 1949 car was darker than the 1947 car. Going back to this topic, I took out some DVDs (courtesy of racerbrown) and checked all the ones that show the '49 winner. Including the movie that shows the car being built and goes right on through the race. it does look, in all the films, that the color was slightly more *blue* in 1949,. I need to know a definitive answer to this since I am building it for the Museum..... Mongo

Walt (oldphotos) assured me that the Blue Crowns stayed the same color for '47-'49. So I am going to go with that. ;D Duplicolor Lt. Met. Blue will be used.

I have built 3 Blue Crown cars for an avid collecter....he talked to Donald Davidson regarding the colors of these cars at an Indy bench racing session. Donald, who is probaby the most respected historian of all things Indy, told him the colors were not the same each year and grew progressively darker. That is how I painted mine '47,'48 beig the same and '49 a touch darker.

Ladies and gents: Before you start painting, I suggest you look at pages 60-61 of Dan Owen's book "Vintage & Historic Indianapolis Race Cars". It shows what is purported to be an UNRESTORED 1949 Blue Crown. It is definitely a darker blue. Photo to follow.

Okay everyone....
Just take a look at Doak Ewing's Rare Sports Films on he 1949 Indy 500 highlight tape...The color has been restored on it and the 49 Blue Crown in all it's glory being built and tested and raced....It is definitely a darker color of Blue than the early Blue Crowns. Also according to Bob Clidinst, who was there in 1949, the 49 Winner was darker than the other two....The numbers had a white circle around he red numbers as well.
Best to you all!
