Classy guy and one of the prettiest cars to ever run at Indy. I'm with Michael, I would have loved to have been there.

I know the Indy winning car was chassis 001 which was the same chassis that JR flipped in Phoenix of that year (later fixed). I dont know how many where made but one of the other cars in 1980 had a different radiator set up and a little different body work.

Also if you note that the car he drove yesterday was just like the 1981 car, with the tunnels and the body work. The 1980 winner was different.
Another fact for The 1980 CART season was it was the last year for "full blown" movable skirts, but they didn't let the teams run them at Indy and Pocono.
I'm also puzzled about the fact that the 2k was the first ground effects indycar? Because the Penske PC7 came out the first race of 79 at Phoenix, when the 2k came out at Indy, 2 races later after the PC7's.
Does the PC7 not count as first ground effects indycar? Is it because it was just under the side pods and not the whole under tray and out the tail?

The PC7 was still a "flat bottom" and was derived from the PC6. Lots of folks were just feeling their way around from an aero standpoint and the Yellow Submarine was way ahead of them at the time.

Although one could argue that the flat bottom PC6 was a ground effects car with the full side skirts it had - except it's 'tunnel' opened up horizontally instead of vertically. It should have had a similar low pressure effect right around or slightly behind the front wheels. But I think they are referring to the Chaparral as being the first ground effects car designed from the beginning that way. What puzzles me is why did it still need such huge wings? In reality the Chaparral was nearly 10mph slower than cars from 1972-73 due to horsepower restrictions. With all the downforce it had, I would think it could have gotten by with trimer wings.
