Well after my recent foray into styrene NASCAR, it is time to return to resin and scratch building…The Stevens/Miller Bowe’s Seal Fast Special, driven by Louis Schneider to victory in 1931…Jorgensen kit: body, engine bottom, radiator shroud, exhaust, gas cap, and SEF wheels and tires…the suspension and interior will be scratch built… I got the front leaf springs, steering wheel, and tie rod from The Parts Box…couldn’t use the front axle, so fabbed my own(not in this picture). Mock up with wheels/ tires… A buddy with a 3D printer is making the rims for the wheels…they will all be black… I will endeavor to post as I go along, sp don’t hesitate to give comments, questions, and suggestions as the WIP unfolds! Thanks for stopping by! Tim

Gentlemen: I always enjoy the research that goes into a build...Ever heard of chassis builder Myron Stevens? Most of us know Harry Miller, the Duesenburg brothers, Frank Kurtis, A J Watson, and Gurney's Eagles, but are unfamiliar with Stevens...his chassis, along with Miller's dominated the 30's "junk formula"...Indy results: 1930: 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th 1931: 1st (this car), 4th 1932: 2nd, 4th, 7th 1933: 2nd, 4th 1934: 2nd 1935: 6th, 7th 1936: 1st 1937: 2nd, 5th, 7th 1938: (return to single seaters) 8th 1939: (no top 10's) 1940: 2nd,6th, 7th, 9th 1941: 2nd 2 WINS and 7 SECONDS...wow! I do not know why he used so much chrome on this car...it appears in old photos to be very nicely turned out, including matching Bowe's drivers' uniforms... Chrome… And more chrome… I have come to enjoy scratchbuilding...most of these parts are that way... What rear leaf springs will fit like... Exhaust partially done… Front leaf springs… *NOTE* Kevin @ Silver City suggested using this... He was spot on! Super finish that is hard to dull even after much handling...by the way; Kevin is an outstanding builder when he's not slinging resin! Radiator shell is very shiny! Body is headed to the paint shop... thanks for stopping by! Questions, comments are welcome! Tim PS: Wait until you see the wheels with the new rims! tj

Love it. I really like the work on the leaf springs. I have had this kit going on for years and have not completed it yet. Looking forward to seeing this one.

Louis Schneider is one of only 2 drivers to be from Indianapolis (Bill Cummings is the other)and win the 500. He got the ride in the Bowe’s car in 1930: He also won the AAA national championship in 1931, so he got the #1 for 1932… He finished 3rd in 1930, 1st in 1931, and 23rd in 1932. Here’s the build up on wheels… Front axle… Random folks checking out the build… Re-done radiator shroud and scratch built front suspension…(I’ll add the scissor shocks and get the paint off the tire)… Need to finish the exhaust… Comments, questions welcome! Thanks for stopping by! Tim

It’s always a big step when it’s on its wheels. And when they all touch! You nailed that. And the elegantly uncomplicated color scheme.
All that’s left are the wings and spoilers. . .

Gentlemen: Thanks for the comments! It is May 30, 1931. There are 40(!) cars lined up for the Indy 500; Louis Schneider is lined up 13th. There is a 2 hour rain delay before the green flag waves. Billy Arnold, who led 198 consecutive laps the year before, bolts from 18th and leads by lap 7.He led the next 155 laps and was up by 5 laps(!!!) on second place. Then on lap 162 his rear axle broke and he went over the wall in Turn 4. He and his riding mechanic are injured but will survive. Not so lucky is an 11 year old playing in his front yard on Georgetown. He is hit by a tire and killed. 2023 was deja vu and when Kirkwood’s tire went out of the track, it was a miracle no one was hit. Louis Schneider made his only pit stop on lap 106, for fuel and a new right rear tire. When Arnold crashed, Schneider took the lead. With 30 laps to go, Schneider and Bill Cummings are nose to tail and it looks like a shoot out to the checkered flag but Cummings crashes out on lap 177, leaving Schneider to come home by 43.19 seconds over second place (at the time, the second closest finish at the Indy 500.) Schneider won the National Championship in '31 but after that he faded and retired. He died of tuberculosis in 1942 at age 40... Front suspension almost all scratch built… This car was challenging but fun. Lots of scratch building but it came out OK.A few things were wrong on the instruction/ modified drawings: different radiator shroud and exhaust flat, not curved. I need to drill it out… Decals by Indycals, body by Jorgensen, a few parts from The Parts Box,gauge rims from Small Great Details, and various plastic and metal parts...chrome from Kevin's comments, and Pure White and Black Tamiya paint...
