I decided to take a page from Kyle’s playbook, and build a plastic kit (mostly OOB), of something different…been doing resin for so long I forgot what styrene glue smells like🤣🤣
So for this “blasphemy” I am doing the 1971 Roadrunner of Richard Petty…my first Salvino’s build…I got the “Grey Ghost” Oldsmobile of Buddy Baker when it first came out, but shelved it because of inaccuracies, which Salvino’s later changed and made additions to the original kit… I’m experimenting on it as I do the Roadrunner, and have gotten correct parts to finish it…
When Craig was still with us, we had several convos and both of us admitted to liking NASCAR from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. Foyt, Gurney, Andretti, Parnelli and Uncle Bobby would enter races and won several in those years. There were not many kits for that time period until Polar Lights and later, Salvino’s came along.
The kit has an excellent body and great decals. It requires some “massaging” to fit correctly, but overall A-.
Dang these are different from Indycars!
I was never a big Petty fan, but I respect him, big time. He would stay at the track long after everyone went home, to make sure the fans got his autograph. 200 victories is probably an unbreakable record, even with 20+ races a year…
Not 100% correct, but close on the chassis…
And can’t forget the Peace Symbol Head Rest!
In 1971, Richard Petty was at the height of his powers, his iconic No. 43 Petty Blue Plymouth continuing to dominate the competition. Ford dropped NASCAR before the season began…For the season, Petty won both his third premier series championship and his third Daytona 500. Petty entered 46 races and won 21 of them, a winning percentage of 45.7 percent. In terms of victories, it was Petty’s second-best year ever, trailing only his record 27 wins in 1967. In both 1967 and ’71, Petty earned career highs with 38 top-five finishes. One last note: 1971 was Richard Petty’s last full season in a Plymouth; by the 11th race of 1972, Petty had switched to Dodges.
Oh yeah…A J won 2 NASCAR races that year
Thanks for stopping by, and thanks Kyle, for inspiration! Comments, questions welcome!
