Gentlemen: Color debates, oh my! I would like to start on this car, another non winner with a cool livery. It was shown to be red, white, and black… White top/ black body and roundels/ red frame rails? ? And the other side… White top/ red body and frame rails/ black 10 and roundels? ? I am looking for opinions…Thanks! Tim

Well Tim...out of the three Indy books I have...two give the color as RED, WHITE, BLACK. So, I think it would be White top, red body and black frame rails. Black #'s and roundels. I hope that that kinda helps..a little anyway.

Well Gary, I agree with you… Here’s where I am… The Lewis/Miller FWD is waiting on paint, so I worked on this one… Needs clear coat and then suspension, dashboard, exhaust, etc. Thanks for looking and questions, comments are welcome! Tim

I didn't see this until you had posted the painted pic of your model, but to my eye (& monitor) it appears more likely that the body is black & white, with a red number on the left hood and a red roundel in the rear. Frame looks black in the top pic and red in the bottom pic! Not much help, I know! Your paint looks great, so forge ahead! Probably no one knows for sure (except maybe Walt)!

To my eye the top picture the frame and the engine cover look different colors. Same for the rear roundel. **Edit, I see Michael's point on the second photo, I should have looked closer** Tim, it is all a guess, I would go with what you have done. WIP looks great, we do not see many runner ups so this is fun! Jordan

Red and black both photographed as black, but red should be lighter when put up next to something black. If I was only presented with the first photo I'd say black body color, red roundel. If I was presented only with the second image, I would say red body color, black roundel. Also - in both photos the numbers are very bright white - much whiter than the top body color. More noticeable in the second photo, but once I knew to look for it, it stood out clear as day in the top photo as well.

I'm gonna put in my two cents and totally confuse you...
Go off what Michael said... to me the hood number in the second photo looks darker then the lower body. And the white "10" looks brighter the the upper body. Sooo...
I say red body, black roundel, black hood number with the upper body either tan or cream.

Red frame rails, red rondels with white numbers. Black lower body. Hood number red? Upper body is not white, the wall and mechanics coveralls are usually white. So maybe cream or even pale yellow for upper body?

This is fun! I have nothing to add only that I agree that it appears that the top color is not bright white. I like cream. But however you paint it, it will be a great looking car.

Thanks for the “color debate” input…I’ll move on while telling the story of Earl Devore… Earl Devore, at the Indy 500, was 13th in 1925: did not qualify in 1926: finished 18th in 1928…in this car, in 1927, he started 15th and finished 2nd, by far his greatest claim to fame…he did not lead a lap, and was 8 laps down(!) to George Souders at the finish…the most iconic photo of the ‘27 Indy 500, was this picture of Norm Batten… Batten will play an important role in this story… Re-donedone paint… It’s a guess from the 2 vintage photographs, but I believe this is the closest color match… No gauges yet… Exhaust… A fun build so far…wrinkles on roundels because they were just applied: they will smooth out with Solva-set…questions, comments welcome! Tim

Gentlemen: The 16th Annual 500 Mile Sweepstakes is run on Monday, May 30th, 1927. Frank Lockhart dominates the first 120 laps, but engine trouble stops him. George Souders, a rookie, takes over and pulls away. Earl Devore starts in 15th place. 122 cubic inch supercharged delivering 250 horsepower… Solid axles and friction shocks… Simple, classic lines… These cars dominated the Speedway in the 20’s… A gentleman checking it out… A mechanic waits… Pushing her out… Devore drove steadily and was running 3rd when Babe Stapp's car quit with 1 and a half laps to go. Devore inherited second place and was 8 laps down at the finish; second largest victory margin 12 minutes and 2.87 seconds...only the 1913 race (Jules Goux) topped that with a 13 minute and 8.4 seconds margin. He was an interesting guy who got with a metals company the next year and drove an all chromium car with several innovations…but it dropped out after 162 laps…the Chromalite Special… Devore and Norm Batten, (the guy who drove the car on fire past the pits in 1927) decided to go to Argentina in the winter of 1928 to compete and earn money racing. They perhaps were offered appearance money and were told the open wheel competition down there was beatable. So with their wives, they set off for the Platte River in December of 1928 on the S S Vestris. It has 100+passengers and a large cargo… The ship encountered a huge storm which was underestimated by the crew, and sank off Hampton Roads on Nov. 12th., with the loss of 111 lives. Devore rescued his wife and he and Batten saved Batten's wife. They then both drowned while trying to help others...another sad tale of Indy drivers... The bright side is that Billy Devore would follow in his father's footsteps and drive at The Indy 500. He holds what is probably an unreachable record: the only man to qualify and finish The Indy 500 in a 6 wheel car... Comments, questions welcome! Thanks for stopping by! Tim

Hi Tim, Interesting back story. You always do that so well. The Miller turned out magnificent and those photos “on the bricks” are icing on the cake. So what’s next. Chromalite special or Pat Clancy 6 wheeler? Inquiring minds, etc. Dan

I agree with Dan. Let’s get going on the Chromalite or Pat Clancy special next. Lol. But seriously. A beautiful build and I love the colors you decided to go with. And Tim, your history lessons are always second to none. Tragic results there with the Vestris but it’s hard to imagine men as brave as those that races at Indy trying to save themselves first in a disaster. So no surprises there. Thanks for sharing the history and the build, my friend.
