i Was going through a bunch of stuff my Mom sent when my Dad passed and there was this Photo. Can Anyone Identify the Eagle in the photo? It looks like a Late 68, but the different nose and the Mclaren style engine cover suggest otherwise. Did it race anywhere in this configuration ...... LMK Chris

1970 Eagle, never seen that engine cover in a race pic. Or that mirror mount, either! Probably a pre-season test configuration.

I think this might be an early "mule" version of the 1970 or 1971 Eagle. The nose is similar along with the exposed Water(?) pipe. Dan ran a turbocharged Offy while most of the others ran Fords. The wheels are like those used in 1971. Hope this helps. Jim

This was the updated 1970 Indy Eagle for the Ontario 500 that season. The engine cover incorporated a low wing, and there were small canard wings on each side mounted just behind the front tires. Rear wing configuration would change over the '71 season, but the side wingless carried through that year.

LMK Chris I was looking through the John Zimmerman book, Dan Gurney Eagle Racing cars, and came across a picture on page 63. It shows Gurney in this car after he qualified for the first 1970 California 500. This was the last Indy car race that he would run before retirement. For those of you that have the book, take a close look at the front row photo and you will see this car in question. Unfortunately Gurney did not finish the race and retired from driving right after. I dont know how long they ran this configuartion. The looks of that 70 Eagle changed dramatically throughout the season. Thanks Kevin.

This configuration of the 1970 Eagle first ran at Ontario. After Dan retired, it ran once more at the season ending Phoenix race with Bobby Unser driving. Swede Savage debuted the "ping pong" table aero package at that race, which he won.
