Last night, I finished my replica of the Auto Union Type D Tazio Nuvolari drove in the 1939 Belgian Grand Prix. By 1938, Nuvolari was perhaps the best of an era that included Achille Varzi, Rudolf Caracciola, and Bernd Rosemeyer. He was also with an Alfa Romeo team that had cut ties with Enzo Ferrari and he considered the subsequent cars of poor quality. This frustration came to a head at the 1938 Pau Grand Prix, where he announced his retirement. After a brief sabbatical to the United States, the German Auto Union firm approached him to drive their cars, which he agreed. He ran with Auto Union until the outbreak of the Second World War, in his two years with Auto Union, he won the Italian Grand Prix, Donington Grand Prix, and the Belgrade Grand Prix. His run of success did not include the 1939 Belgian Grand Prix, from which he withdrew after suffering crash damage. This is built straight from the Fernando Pinto kit. I painted it Tamiya gloss aluminum, and used Indycals Alfa Romeo P3 decals for the number 2s (the fonts are a perfect match). The kit is nice and I came out with a real winner. Thanks for looking!

Very nice build. His stuff really does capture the look of the cars he does. He is old school and I love his kits, although they can be tricky to make.

Pre-WWII German GP cars are always interesting to me. Great job on the build and creative use of other decals to make this car! Great to see the quality car builds with thorough histories coming off your bench, Jerry!
