I would expect any team owner to do the same if one of his drivers breaks a signed contract.

I would be more surprised if Alex is driving for Ganassi next year, even if Ganassi wins the suit.

Sure seems like Alex is homesick…I don’t like the idea personally, but if I grew up n Europe, I would want to eventually drive Formula 1…I know, I know, Indycar is vastly more entertaining but I’m an American. Everyone I know who moved to Europe from the States always comment on how big F1 is across the pond…The McLaren boys have tons of cash and seem to be “overbuying” drivers. It’s like “last guy out “ gets Formula E…

Why would any car owner want to retain a driver who doesn't want to be there? A very foolish and possibly expensive thing to do. He won't give you 100%, or he'll give you 120% until you can't afford any more crashed race cars and let him go. Better to make a deal with the other team involved and walk away and find somebody else.

If there is a valid contract already in place, Ganassi has to protect himself. If you let one driver break a contract, none of your contracts are worth anything (sets a precedent). What Chip will probably get (and what he may want, at this point) is a big payout from McLaren to let Palou go. Mike

Racing is a team, no different than hockey or baseball. If a player wants a trade, trade him, at least you get something in return, even if it's cash. If you force him to stay, you might get a year more of his service, but at a reduced performance level, and at the end he will walk and you'll get nothing in return.
