Please skip ahead to see the photos...I, almost exclusively build cars. The majority of which are race cars of some sort, open wheel being my favorite. I built a couple of airplanes back in about 2017 when I was first getting back into modelling after about a 10 year break. Shortly after that I discovered Tamiya F1 kits, and old Indycar kits on eBay and abandoned airplanes entirely.
Well, a recent trip to the National Museum of the USAF in Dayton inspired me to jump back into modelling some airplanes...specifically the piston driven ones, which I prefer over most jet powered ones. I found this kit from a hobby shop on Facebook, of all places and decided to give it a try. 4 Rolls-Royce Griffons producing nearly 10,000 horsepower with 8 contra-rotating props contributed to that decision. The Shackleton is a cool aircraft with roots in WW2 and a long service history that stretched from the 1950s all the way to 1991. Pretty big project for me to jump into as my first plane in 5 years.
The kit is a relatively recent re-release and from Revell with new tooling to replace the ancient Frog/Revell kit that they used to have. The new kit is really a nice kit. Great surface details, solid fit with limited gaps to fill. Only place it falls short is interior details, but you can't see those anyways, so well done Revell. I had a blast building it. Lots of wing walkway decals weren't a problem coming from race liveries. However, some weathering (which I'm completely unused to, coming from the "make the thing look nice" school), antenna wires and canopy masks were all new experiences. Anyways, I'm happy with the result and thought I'd share on here in case anyone else on this forum is interested in airplanes. Enjoyed it so much I'm considering picking up Airfix's version (also a newish tool) to compare and pair with the Revell version. Now its back to my Fujimi 126CK that's been languishing on my bench off and on for a month. On to the photos. 2nd to Last photo just to show the antenna wire. Impossible to see. Notice the ridiculous size even in 1/72 scale. No idea what I'm going to do with this monstrosity but it's mine now...
