Of all the 72 Eagle photos, I have never seen this one. It looks like a 71 rear wing and a Eagle/McLaren front nose. Obviously, in the very early stages of development. Any information would be greatly appreciated. No I am not doing any of these modifications in kit form. LOL. Kevin

What a great assortment of employee vehicles in the parking lot: Ranchero; VW Buggy; another Ranchero; old ('53?) Ford Pickup and a Corvair! Oh, and it IS an interesting version of the Eagle, too!

Remember the 1971 . Gordon Coppuck draw its "Lotus 72 inspired" McLaren M16 with long sharp nose and low "small" (58") low rear wing . The consept was better on the speedway than on the road tracks because there was not the pitch up when they send the gas. (The Lotus 72 have this problem in 1970 .)
After Indy 500 everybody put rear wing on their cars ,and for Ontario ,the rule change a bit and the wings became higher and bigger . For 1972 the first M16B was like that.
The new 1972 Eagle was on the same "model" (Lotus 72 inspired) with long sharp nose and small rear wing .
To increase the rear down force the rear wing became bigger ,wider (63") and moved more to the rear . BUT .... the rule was the maximum length 115" and the noses need to be cut . To balance the cars , the shorter noses need bigger canard wings ..... and a small splitter .
If the McLaren keep the long nose until Indy 500 (in may) , B. Unser's Eagle have shorter nose since the first race ,Jimmy Bryan 150 , in march .

There is a series of very similar pictures in "Dan Gurney's Eagle Racing Cars" by John Zimmerman. In those pictures, the NACA duct is covered over by sheet metal and racer's tape and it looks as if the nose had been shortened as the tip of it is sheet metal as well. The caption on one of the pictures says it was taken on December 11, 1971, the day after Unser did a 190mph lap in the car's first shake down at Ontario. I'd guess your picture was taken on December 9, before the Ontario test.
