This was the first D50 I made back in the '80s... Then, in the '90s I did this one, and the last D50 was this one (I still have this one!) I think this began as a MPC slot car body and after much research (the car was hand painted!!)... the car which still needs the correct knockoffs, mirrors, and windscreen. Patrick

Hi PAtrick,
A model after my own heart! ;D
I found my camera, so I can finally take some pictures of my *yellow* D-50 built from a Strombecker glue bomb. It is in about the same stage of construction as yours, but no decals yet......

Well here's the progress on the von Trips Italian GP 801. The slim sides are done, the nose is now a long version (to be painted yellow for Trips), and the exposed side exhaust (what BLOODY hell they were!). more to come... Patrick

Hi Patrick,
I picked up a built up on ebay a while ago. From the pictures it looked like it was a real glue bomb, but when it arrived I couldn't bring myself to touch it! It had Herb's wheels (back when he had all the parts, tires and all!) and the brackets to hang the tanks and everything else was very, very nice! A real surprise, but kinda a bummer, too....... I wanted to use it for a base to do a very good model and it already was! LOL!! Other than the windscreen, and the circular hump on the nose in front of the hood, it is very nicely done. I had a magazine from the early '60s (MCS??) that had an article on doing the conversion and actually started it back then...... found one of th etanks which I had removed in a box of stuff a couple weeks ago. ;D

Cool find my friend. How 'bout a photo?
My 801 project is going well, I'm working on the rather simple interior, not too detailed, just some slab sides and a semi accurate ladder frame. I need to keep it simple. Photos to follow.

Finally got off my keester and painted the Typo801. Now it is scrounging up rear suspension and wire wheels. I dislike photo etched ones so this may take some time. I can hardly wait 'till I paint the nose extention...white I think for von Trips' Monza car. Patrick

Wow! 4 years ago! And progress has been made. You see one must go back and finish something once in a while...So... that's where it stood so long ago, until... I opened the box and Bing! I saw how I could finish this conversion...adding the unseen transaxle... I added some Evergreen rod and aluminum paint trailing links... the interior in glued in as are the %*#&@ exhaust pipes... Now, I have to get the nose painted yellow for Trips' car. He had a good finish at the Italian GP of 1957. It was a 3rd place, first Ferrari to finish. He was a talented driver against the likes of Moss, Fangio, Musso and others. Patrick

Nice job, Patrick. So Trips ran a yellow nose and not white?

Yes, Musso ran the white nose, Hawthorne ran the BRG nose and Collins has the blue nose. Interestingly, Hawthorne and Collins did practice with long carb intakes, but Hawthorne did the race without it.

Thanks guys. Trevor, I just noticed the difference in the shape of the intake space. Hawthorn's is flattened and Musso's is rounded. Cool!

It is getting a bit closer to being finished. I added the splash guards.. and decals. The nose isn't glued yet... the interior is pretty much done with wire bezels around the instruments that are filled with Testors' Clear Parts Cement. The seat is a Monogram 427 Cobra one and the steering wheel from the "bottomless spares box"... Just a few more little things and Trips' car is done (only took 4 years, eh?). Patrick

For those that dont know, Patrick has the tendency to turn Cobra's into Ferrari's! Last year on the sportscar forum he turned an AC Cobra into a Ferrari 225S!

Well. it is officially done, not the best, but done! Not the best and the exhausts are a bit too long, but... I still have a Hong Kong toy version of this car...maybe someday I'll do the full body work car. Patrick
