This afternoon I saw a huge plane coming towards my location on my flight radar app. I looked up and this HUGE Boeing 777 was coming over, shooting spray off the wingtips. Then notice the smaller jet (Fighter jet(?)) alongside. This is NOT the normal contrails coming off the engines. Could it have been dumping fuel? Because it would turn off and on.... Does anyone know what could be going on???

I'm quite sure it was dumping fuel, Calvin. The very short duration of the flight, and fuel dump indicates a problem shortly after takeoff. I can't explain the fighter unless it was in the area and was asked to look the airliner over, or a chase plane. Your local news may have some information. The fact that this was a Boeing plane indicates, to me that this was some kind of a problem on a test flight of some sort.

Craig Another interesting thing is it has bright pink/or red under the wings and the landing gear was out. I just find it wild, it would dump jet fuel over our town. Thanks for your information, Craig.

Also, why would they dump fuel before landing again? Is it because it's too heavy to land?

Planes dump fuel quite often. Calvin. It comes out as a mist and is gone before it hits the ground,

The above is all correct. They 777 is a long haul plane, think LAX to Australia/Japan/etc. They take off with more weight than they can land with because they know they will be burning fuel for ~8 hours before their scheduled landing. They dump fuel when there is an issue and they have to land early. If they land heavy, they could damage the plane. A Delta flight got in a heckabunch of troubles for dumping low to the ground over populated areas around LA, including a school with kids at recess. Typically fuel dumps are done high or over water/unpopulated areas (which probably explains why they were dumping over you). As far as this instance, looks like Boeing made this 777 during COVID and might be using it for testing. A lot of flights to and from Boeing. Looks like they did something similar yesterday. Flying around and a return trip. flightaware.com/live/flight/N779XYSearch of the tailnumber www.planespotters.net/airframe/boeing-777-9-n779xy-boeing/r6kg1zJordan

Great information, Jordan. That flight app has more details than mine. Its all making sense, now. No doubt a test plane.

And the small plane is a Lockheed T-38 used by Boeing as a chase plane... Note the blue pattern on the wings.

So it is a regular practise to dump fuel mid flight and it should turn to a mist and not be an issue as it drops down towards the ground. Didn't have a clue. Must be a minimum height imposed surely.
Still would'nt light me ciggie for a bit though.
At Donnington Park the hairpin loop behind the pits could throw engineers and drivers off their set ups from time to time as the planes from nearby East Midlands Airport took off and climbed away directly over that part of the track. If conditions were still and just right, or more to the point, wrong, that part of the track could become affected as exhaust/expellant and other fluid residue from the jets made things a bit slippery.
Thankfully no blue ice issues have ever been reported there!

And in similar news, I have family and friends that live in a very remote part of Washington state and of course they saw my post on social media about this plane, and today they are freaking out because there's contrails EVERYWHERE today and the whole sky is full of contrails and there never is jets flying over this particular location. Lol 😂

I had wondered why the 777's landing gear is down at 12k+ ft but Calvin's video showed they are probably trying to gauge the maximum fuel reduction capability.

Jordan I'm assuming they were trying to "dirty it up" more drag, more fuel burned. Btw it flew over our place again yesterday and was dumping fuel, again. I didn't bother taking a picture because it was 5 miles in the sky, the picture I took was 3.5 miles in altitude.
