Just heard that Danny Ongais passed away on the 26th. Complications from congestive heart failure.

Godspeed Danny Ongais. One of racing's more enigmatic individuals.

Danny could and did drive everything well. I always felt bad because most remember him only because of his horrendous crash at Indy. Rest easy Danny O.

Was at the IMS Museum on the 26th when a clip of his Interscope car on the hook came on the video. Was there with a work friend and we discussed him for a spell.
RIP On the Gas

Shame we're losing so many lately...a lot of the tv stars, musicians and racers we all grew up with and admired.
Stay "On the Gas" till you reach the pearl gates. We're going to miss you Danny...

This news is a jolt.
Watched that Black Interscope lead at Brands, admittedly on TV back in 1978, and was immediately taken by that driver and car combination.
Always took note of anything Interscope after that when mentioned in the UK 'comics'. The Indycars, the IMSA Porsches and Lola T600s.
Sure he was admired by so many all over Europe as much as he was in the U.S.
R.I.P.

Most of you have probably heard this. Of course we all know that Al Unser Sr. got his 4th win as a substitute driver for Danny Ongais. Al even acknowledged this in victory lane saying "This should be his.". Fast forward to 1996 when Scott Brayton got killed. Menard needed a driver to take over the car. The story is that he offered the ride to Al Unser Sr. Al declined saying that he was permanently retired - supposedly he then told Menard to hire Danny Ongais, who ended up driving the car in what was his final Indy 500 start.

No, I never heard that story. Fascinating. I wonder if Ongais would have won the race that Al Sr won, though, as his driving style was very different from Unser's. It's hard to imagine that he's gone.
